Tinton Falls is located in the borough of Hamilton, New Jersey. The population was 8,593 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1795 by Loyalists from Ulster County, New York. It became a borough on April 14, 1908. Tinton Falls has a total area of 23 square miles (61 km2). The first guns to be used in Tinton Falls were made by John Trumbull and Samuel Colt during the American Revolution. In 1814, Major General George Washington visited Tinton Falls and ordered all the cannons that could be brought to Fort Lee for use against British forces stationed there. In 1831, James Sibley started manufacturing rifles in Tinton Falls. He also built a sawmill and a gristmill in the town. The mills were destroyed by fire in 1899 but have been rebuilt several times since then. In 1840, Elias Howe bought land southeast of Tinton Falls and began building a cotton plantation called “Howe’s Plantation” which eventually grew into one of the largest plantations ever owned by an individual in upstate New York. In 1852, Anthony Biddle set up his lumber business near what is now Route 22 in Tinton Falls Township and began importing arms from England for local militias throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania during the late 19th century before setting up his own factory here in 1892-1893 which produced pistols using US make L&R guns instead of imported English models – making this one of only two such factories actually operating outside London at that time! The name "Tinton Falls" is derived from the two words "tanning" and "falls," which both reflect the natural phenomena of water running down a hillside to form a falls. The fall itself can be seen from many places in Tinton Falls including Crossroads Park, Fenton Road and Pond Avenue. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,914 people, 692 households, and 439 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 527.3 people per square mile (220.1/km²). There were 712 housing units at an average density of 257.4 per square mile (103.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 98% White; 2% African American; 0% Native American; 1% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3% of the population
