Lee's estate in Virginia where both brothers lived before moving to Hunterdon County. The first store in Tinton Falls opened on Main Street in 1819. In 1861, General Pemberton sent a brigade under Colonel John Denny to attack Fort Fisher but were repulsed with heavy losses; this event is commemorated by a monument located near the intersection of Route 9 and Caton Avenue that reads "John Aiken's Brigade Lost at Fort Fisher November 6th 1861". On July 20, 1916, during World War I the United States Marines landed at Gwynns Island off Long Beach Township (now East Brunswick) after being called up because of World War I tensions between Germany and Austria-Hungary; they burned down all buildings except two Marine Barracks while serving as guards over American citizens fishing on Gwynns Island as part of an enforcement campaign against poachers on Long Beach Township shorelines. This event is also commemorated by a plaque located just offshore from Gwynns Island that read "USMC Landing 1916". In 1944 local officials established an agricultural fair which continued until 1959 when it was replaced by a fireworks show which has been held annually since then. In 1857, the first post office opened in Tinton Falls and remained open until 1964. In 1892, the first church was built in Tinton Falls and remains active today as First Baptist Church of Tinton Falls. The spring that supplied water to most of northeastern Essex County for over 200 years came to an end when a major new reservoir was constructed on Long Branch Creek near Sayreville about two miles east of town in 1916 by then-Governor Woodbury Robinson (D). Now known as Township Lake, this project connected Sayreville with Easton and other townships throughout Hunterdon County by way of an underground pipeline. As more people moved into what had been rural areas outside of Newark during World War II—many coming from eastern Pennsylvania—the demand for water became increasingly high as industries expanded along Long Branch Creek. By 1950, almost all residents living within 1 mile (2 km) of township limits used public water; only four dozen homes still relied upon private wells before 1965. However, despite these efforts to improve access to clean drinking water for everyone within township limits through central treatment facilities, many residents continued to rely on local springs for their needs until they were discontinued altogether beginning in 1965 due tobudget restrictions caused by state government austerity measures following World War II . By 1970 only one percent of households served without public water; however since then township residents have slowly migrated away from using municipally provided service to reliance on private systems fewer than half again now serve without it . Today nearly all residents living within 1 mile (2 km) of township limits use public water; only four dozen homes still rely upon private wells before 1965
