The AR15 has a long and proud history, and this article will explore some of that history. First off, let's take a look at what the AR15 is: an American-made assault rifle designed in 1968 by Browning/Patriots Arms Company president Bob Smith as part of their larger rifle line. At its heart is the M16A1 design—a selective fire weapon featuring an all-steel barrel with a muzzle velocity of 3,000 fps (1240 m/s). The first true models were chambered for 7.62x39mm NATO rounds; however, most early rifles were soon converted to 5.56x45mm NATO after feedback from troops in Vietnam indicated they preferred this cartridge over 6 mm Remington Magnum ammunition available then (though it would be some time before full production began on such conversion kits).
