Tenafly is a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Monmouth Peninsula and bordered by Neptune Township to the northwest, Atlantic City to the northeast, and East Brunswick Township to the southeast. The township was formed on March 15, 1814 from part of West Milford Township. The first Settlers were John and Elizabeth Tenafly who arrived in 1764 from England with their three children. The name "Tenafly" comes from two Dutch words meaning "a place where many reeds grow." In 1814 when it was organized as a township, it had only 9 residents. Tenafly's earliest settlers were Greeks who immigrated there in search of opportunity in what was then an agricultural society. They built cabins near where they now live on Old Mill Road (now known as North Beach Boulevard). In 1875-76 some Germans also came to Tenafly and started a grocery store which still stands today. By 1898 there were over 100 German-owned businesses in Tenafly with a population of 592 citizens; today this number has decreased to about 70 businesses with a population of only 350 citizens because of economic conditions since 2000! In 1922 Tenafly had its first post office (named after General George Washington) which opened on Main Street adjacent to Stinson's Point Park where Now called Middle Road. For many years mail delivery took place through local farmers until 1905 when ZIP Code 20111 made it possible for residents anywhere within New Jersey to have their own postal service! In 1916 TenafLY closed its doors for good due to lack of business potential but reopened some years later under new management as American Legion Post #2143; serving current residents until 1984 when it became Post #3448! In 2006 ten AFYLA members moved into new facilities just outside town limits that serve both locals and visitors alike! There are currently 10 schools within one mile radius of TenafLY including: Holy Angels School District - open since 1954; Ridgewood Intermediate School District - open since 1976; Neptune Middle/High School District - open since 1994; White Sands Elementary School District - open since 1996; Cedar Cliff Elementary School District - open since 1998; South Passaic Intermediate SchoolDistrict - opensince 2002 ; Asbury Park Jr./Sr High Schools (PLHS) –Asbury Park HSopened 2007 & Friends Academy opened 2009 &2010 !!! Tenafly was a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States from 1853 to 1951. The population was 5,569 at the 2000 census. The town was named for Major John Tenafly (1793-1868), an American colonel who served in the Union army during the American Civil War and then as military governor of New Mexico. The first settlers in what is now Tenafly were two brothers, Abraham and Isaac Green. They began farming land in 1795 and built a log cabin on their farmstead which they called "The Gables." In 1803, they added another building - a house - to their farmstead and named it "The Graces." Over time, other residents of Tenafly included: Abijah Prentice (1811-1897), Amos Morse (b. 1814), Jacob Weymouth (d. 1865), Mercy Whitehead (b. 1824), Levi Dickinson (born 1830), Simon Stevens (born 1834) and Solomon Davenport Jr.(d. 1909). In 1853, when Monmouth County was founded, the village of West Milford had about 200 people living thereabouts; Tenafly had only 10 residents. Reverend Gideon Blackman of Milford organized a church in Tenafly in October of that year with twelve members; he also erected a schoolhouse which became operational on December 1st.* On January 1st following, Rev Blackman baptized fifteen children into the Methodist Church at Tenafly while Rev Fenton preached†† from First Baptist Church located at West Milford‡‡*. It should be noted that services were originally conducted outdoors due to inadequate facilities back then! Reverend Gideon Blackman remains one of the most important figures associated with early Methodistism in Monmouth County!†† On February 3rd following 1800s pioneer George Washington Cobb arrived at his new home on the corner of Manor Road & Princeton Avenue* *It should be noted that this property would later become part of Garfield National Cemetery! George Washington Cobb is considered to be one of America's pioneers because he traveled extensively throughout North America helping settle new towns/ villages* *It should also be noted that Cobb donated many acres of land surrounding his home for township construction purposes!
Tenafly was founded in 1795 by the Dutchman Hendrik Tenafly and his wife, Anna. The town was named after a small stream that ran through it. It quickly grew into a thriving community, with many businesses and homes being built. In 1853, Tenafly became part of the new township of Monmouth County. In 1916, Tenafly was destroyed in an attack by the Italian military forces during World War I. A few years later, the town regained its former glory as a center for industry and commerce. However, by the 1930s, Tenafly had begun to decline economically due to competition from larger towns in neighboring counties. By the 1970s, it had become a largely agricultural community with only a few businesses remaining active. However, over time there has been occasional redevelopment of some of its older buildings. In recent years there has been major revitalization efforts underway to bring back business and population to Tenafly while also preserving its historic character.
