Tenafly is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,827. The name Tenafly comes from the Delaware Native American word "talawa," meaning "haunted place." The first Europeans to visit what is now Tenafly were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. The English claimed it as part of South Monmouthshire Township on November 15, 1664. By 1728, Tenafly had a population of 350 people and was known as one of the most rural towns in New Jersey. In 1825, Tenafly became part of Rahway Township and by 1839 it had become an incorporated village with a population of 2200 people. In 1851 the boundaries of Rahway were changed to form Monmouth County and Tenafly became part of that county. Parts of present-dayTenafly were settled during the time period when America's first railroads were being built; these include parts of Cedar Grove (now called West Caldwell), East Caldwell and South Caldwell streets near present-day exit 20 onto I-95 southbound at Exit 63A (the old Tunnells Avenue). These settlements occurred before rails reached central NJ permanently; they are mentioned only because they are nearby modern day communities which grew up around them rather than developing from their locations directly around railroad tracks!
