Tenafly is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,584 at the 2010 census. The name Tenafly comes from an ancient Lenape Indian word meaning "place of peace." The first European to visit Tenafly was Captain John Scherrier in 1664 and he called it "Tnaflalie" or "The place of peace." In 1714, George Washington visited Tenafly and his troops encampment there on their way to Trenton. In 1815, when the United States began its Civil War, General James Webb's army passed through the town en route to Camden.
