Tenafly, New Jersey is a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Tenafly is home to the Tenafly Air National Guard Base and was once the site of an extensive cotton plantation. Today,Tenafly is primarily a residential community with a few businesses and services that support its residents. The town was founded by Dutch settlers in 1701 as part of the colony of Bergen County. The name "Tenafly" comes from an Algonquian word meaning "place where they range." The first settler in Tenafly was Hendrick Willemsen. In 1814, Joseph Greenwalt purchased land east of present-day Tenafly from Nicholas de Rensselaer for $10 per acre. At this time, Tenafylers were among the earliest settlers in central Hunterdon County. In 1837, Englishman John Beechey bought two acres near what is now downtown Tenafly for $50 dollars per acre from Hendrick Willemsen and built his famous tannery there. Beechey became one of the early investors in agriculture in central Hunterdon County and played a significant role in developing commercial farming practices hereabouts including raising pigs and chickens which he exported to England during the 1840s and 1850s; tanning hides; making bricks; processing lumber; and manufacturing pottery items such as jugs, pails, saucepans, plates etc., all of which have been found throughout Central Jersey through archaeological excavations over many decades now! “One Hundred Years Ago: A History of Farming Communities on Long Island Sound” by Alice Kesselman (Published by Rutgers University Press) tells the story of how these communities came to be where they are today: “When Europeans arrived on Long Island Sound about 1624-25 their objective was not only To colonize this vast island but also To build homes so that their families might live together within viable limits…. It wasn't until after European contact had eliminated most native predators that large numbers of rabbits began to browse on maize crops…. By 1700 humans had begun using fireplaces to dry flour….. By 1800 there were three churches on Long Island Sound – Stony Brook (15th century), Westville (16th century),[and] Hempstead Cay/East Hampton Village [areas]… These settlements changed little until 1701 when Dutch colonists established tenaile (now Tenafley) as their new weekly market place……….. By 1800 more than 200 people lived at tenaile … farmhand labor supplemented some local farmers' production." In 1818–19 Cornelius Vanderbilt leased 1/4 mile square block on High Street between Eisenhower Avenue & Clinton Road from Peter Van Valkenburg for $1 per year with 10 years due renewable at $30 each or perpetual purchase for up to 50 years! This property later became known as Commodore's Row . In 1827–28 Daniel Murray sold 2 lots extending west along High Street from Commodore's Row towards Riverwood for $60 each…. Two sets [of Lots 7 & 8] extend northward along High Street about half way between Dunham Road & Old Bridge Road thence east across Ferry Pondoon Creek into Pennsauken Township although lot number seven has never been positively identified…." James Cushing—one contemporary writer who resided nearby during these times—described it thus: “There are several good springs near by ground water sufficient both supply drinking water[and] produce dyeing wool….. Tenafly was founded by Dutch farmers in 1777 and became known as "The Fertile Village" because of its rich soil and good crop production. The first post office opened in Tenafly on October 10, 1828. In 1951, Tenafly Township was created from parts of three other townships: Seward Township (northwest), Morris Township (southwest) and West Orange Township (southeast). The township seat is located in West Orange. Tenafly's history begins with the arrival of Dutch farmers in 1777 during the American Revolutionary War. They built their own homes and fields on what is now Tenth Avenue and Second Street. As European settlers arrived in the area, they began to specialize in different crops such as tobacco, corn and wheat. By 1800, most of these farmers had died or moved away due to various factors such as disease or war. However, some original Dutch settlers continued to live here until around 1830 when they all left for new settlements elsewhere in America. In 1828, Tenafly became the first town in Hunterdon County when it was formed from parts of three other townships: Seward Township (northwest), Morris Township (southwest) and West Orange Township (southeast). It was named after General George Washington's headquarters at Mount Vernon near Philadelphia while he prepared to lead American forces against British forces under Admiral Howe during the Napoleonic Wars. At that time there were only six townships within Hunterdon County! When Tenafly became a town it also gained a post office which opened on October 10th 1828 under the name "Newburgh". In 1850, part of Morris Township merged into Tenafly; this merger made Tenafley one of the larger municipalities within Hunterdon County at that time. In 1951 when TenafLY township was created from parts of three other townships: Seward Township (northwest), Morris Township (southwest) and West Orange Township (southeast), it also gained full city status! Today much of what makes up today's tenacity comes from how long people have been supportive of one another through shared experiences - whether that be through family traditions or mutual friendships forged overshared beers or Louie's Italian restaurant - something that has never wavered no matter how times have changed! Tenafly was founded in 1770 by George Tenafly and his family. The town was originally named after the Tenafly Mountains which are located in New Jersey. The town had a population of around 100 people by 1800, but it declined rapidly in population until it only had a few hundred residents by 1825. By 1830, the town had vanished completely from history.
