In 1915, Tenafly became home to Newark–Camden Regional Airport (now known as Secaucus Junction), which served as an airfield for military and commercial flights during World War I and World War II. In 1951, Tenafly annexed what was thenknown as East Brunswick Township (to the east). Asangerous floods that year caused extensive damage to homes and businesses in East Brunswick Township but no damage to Tenafly's water tower. The town's only gasoline station reopened six months later after being rebuilt with state funds using local materials obtained from farmers and ranchers who donated their land for the new airport terminal building and other infrastructure projects. In 1984, when NJDOT built a new bypass around Tenafley Township, portions of which were located within South Monmouth Borough borders thereof along Interstate 287 northbound between Exit 15A (the old exit ramp off US 1/9)and Exit 16A (south of SR 2/3), South Monmouth Borough severed its ties with Tenafyl
Tenafly, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Tenafly were Dutch traders in 1614. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "a place for gathering nuts." In 1834, the township was organized and named after Brother John Tenafly (1792-1868), a Catholic missionary who had come to America in 1824 and founded two religious orders: the Sisters of Charity (founded 1836) and the Brothers of Loretto (founded 1840). Tenafly began as an agricultural community with subsistence farming techniques but by 1890 it had developed into a manufacturing center with pulpwood printing presses and other industrial products. By 1921 Tenafly had become one of the most important commercial centers in Mercer County with twelve stores and eighty-six workers employed in twenty-four businesses. The population fell to 7,521 by 1950 because of declines in manufacturing, commercial activity, and suburban growth; however, it has since rebounded thanks to strong job creation throughout all economic sectors which has led to new housing developments such as Park Road Street Town Center and Old Bridge Township Shopping Center which have replaced older buildings vacated by businesses that closed down or became defunct during economic downturns. In recent years there has been a proliferation of high tech companies locating their offices in nearby towns like Glassboro Township or Cherry Hill Township although many smaller companies still maintain their headquarters here including Johnson Controls Company until recently when they moved their operations out of state citing higher costs associated with having their headquarters within commuting distance of Newark Liberty International Airport rather than closer to home where they operate today. Other famous residents include former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher who attended school here; basketball coach Rick Majerus; singer Sammy Davis Jr.; actor Frankie Avalon; composer Jerome Kern; author Irwin Shaw; journalist Bob Woodward; and politician Frank Lautenberg (D–Nj). In recent years, Tenafly has seen growth as an agricultural center with crops like tomatoes and potatoes being grown hereabouts along with livestock such as pigs and horses. However, some businesses that have thrived over the years include tenaflyschools which offer education from pre-kindergarten all the way up to college level courses as well as a variety of hobbies for children such as fishing or golfing (the community does have one golf course however).
