According to the United States Census Bureau, Tenafly has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2 km²), of which 0.7 square miles (2 km²) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.3 km²) (0.5%) is water. The first settler in what became Tenafly was Abram Weis who arrived in 1795 from Germany along with his family and another 300 settlers from New Netherland who had come there as part of George Washington's army during the American Revolution. Weis named his new community after Chief Justice John Marshall's hometown in Virginia where he had been born some years earlier while studying law under Marshall's father-in-law, Judge Thomas Woodbury Jr.. In 1802 Weis sold his holdings in Tenafly to John Dickinson for $2000 cash which at that time constituted about one-seventh of an acre (.4 hectares). Dickinson renamed it "Dickinsonown" after himself and built a gristmill there soon afterwards which continued operation until 1903 when it was replaced by a more modern mill known today as Ridgeway Mill #1 due to its significant donation by Businessman Abe Ridgeway sr., son of Abe Ridgeway jr., in 1954 for use as a museum dedicated to local history and industry within 10 miles (16 km) of Tenafly including Newark & Morristown
