Gun targets have been a part of the Tenafly community since the early 1800s. One of the oldest, and most popular,gun targets in Tenafly is that of the seven-pointed star. The star was designed to represent American independence and patriotism. It has become a familiar symbol in Tenafly, as well as throughout New Jersey, for many reasons. The first guns used in response to target shooting were muskets. By 1776, pistols had replaced muskets as the main firearms in use in America. The Seven-Pointed Star became popularized by Captain John Woolridge of Trenton during his 1814 campaign against Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show at Woodstock. Captain Woolridge captured an American flag with a seven-pointed star on it and flew it above his tent during his show. This led to the development of target shooting contests using this design as their basis. By 1860, there were over 2,000 gun ranges across New Jersey including those at Princeton University (then known as Rutgers), Princeton Manor (now called East Brunswick), and other locations around Newark and Elizabethtown. There were also target ranges located at various military installations such as Fort Lee (now Arlington National Cemetery) and Bordentown Naval Shipyard. In 1865, Colonel Edward Ayer founded what would become one of America’s leading rifle clubs – The Riflemen’s Club of America – which soon evolved into one of its largest organizations after becoming affiliated with the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1868). At this point,gun targets began appearing on college campuses across America; thus making them common sights for students living away from home while attending school or working during lunchtime or evening classes! As American troops departed for World War I in 1917, GUNTARGETS became increasingly important through patriotic displays during Victory parades throughout America; often flying American flags withTarget stars affixed! In 1919 gunfire practice ended once again following World War I buttarget Shooting continued annually until 1972 when it was finally banned altogether due to concerns about crossfire! Tenafly is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Tenafly is located on Route 22 north of Plainfield and east of Freehold. The first European inhabitants of what is now Tenafly were Dutch farmers who settled there in 1664. The area was known as "Willemstadt" (now Willemstad) and was part of the Bergen Township section of Monmouth County until 1709 when it became part of Hunterdon Township. In 1814, Tenafly formed part of the newly created Middlesex County, which included all the land west of the Delaware River between Trenton and Camden. In 1828 Tenafly annexed parts of East Warren Township to form its own municipality; this annexation made it one of five townships in Middlesex County that did not become boroughs until 1902. According to the United States Census Bureau,Tenafly has a total area of , all land. As of the census[2]of 2010, there were 2,827 people residing in the township: 1,621 households (67%) with individuals under 18 years old living alone, 517 families (24%) with individuals 65 years or older living alone, and 172 businesses (10% with employees). The racial makeup Of The township was 98% White trash/Caucasian 1% Black or African American 0%, Native American 0%, Asian 0%, Pacific Islander 0%.
