Tenafly, New Jersey is a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Atlantic Junction metropolitan area. The Town of Tenafly first Ordinance No. 1 was passed on November 3rd, 1847 and amended on February 12th, 1868 which regulated the carrying of firearms within the limits of the town. The Township of Tenafly passed their own ordinance no less than three times between 1870 and 1903 regulating gun ownership and use within their township boundaries but never became effective due to opposition from neighboring municipalities such as Atlantic City and Camden. A local group called "The Citizens' Committee Against Gun Violence" (CCCGV) emerged in 1990 to promote gun control measures in the community while working with state legislators Democrats Dick Codey and Bob Smith from Mercer County who represented Hunterdon County in Trenton, New Jersey; however without success until 2005 when then-Assemblyman Tom MacArthur introduced legislation to make Tenafly an urban center for gun violence prevention using his authority as Majority Leader of the Assembly's Judiciary Committee. Today, Tenafly is home to a variety of businesses including two banks - First National Bank & Trust Company and PNC Bank - as well as numerous small businesses catering to locals or travelers who are visiting nearby Princeton University or Monmouth University. It is named for Commodore John Tenafly, commander of the U.S. Naval forces in Cuba during the Spanish-American War and one of the most decorated officers of his time. The first settler in Tenafly was Samuel French who arrived from Rhode Island on October 8, 1838. France's family founded the village along with six other settlers: George Washington (a Revolutionary War veteran), John French (the father of Samuel), Amos Greenough (a Quaker investor and future president of Rutgers University), Michael Coyle (an Italian immigrant who would found Fair Lawn, also in Morris County), and Abraham Browning (a German immigrant who settled near West Orange). The first school opened in 1839; it served as an academy until 1862 when it became a high school.
