Tenafly was a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, until the 1920s. It began as a small farming community on the east bank of the Raritan River, and gradually grew into a large commercial center. The town was renamed Tenafly after its founder, Samuel Tenafly. The first settlers of Tenafly were farmers who came from New York in 1824. They built their first homes near the river in what is now Midtown Tenafly. By 1830, they had outgrown their farmhouses and erected store buildings and other structures on Main Street and around what is now Washington Avenue. In 1835, when William O'Neill moved to Tenafly from Rahway Township, he erected a two-story structure on what is now Third Street that still stands today. Tenafly's growth continued throughout the 19th century; by 1870 it had over 100 residents and several businesses including doctors, lawyers, bankers and merchants.During its prime years as an agricultural center (1890-1920), Tenafly produced hay for local markets as well as cotton ginned yarn for export to England and other countries. At various times during this time there were five different banks in TenafLY – First National Bank (1890-1900), Second National Bank (1901-02), Chase National Bank (1903-07), Merchants Trust Company (1908-10) and American Trust Company (1911). During World War I the population of Tenafly increased by 350%. More than 2,000 men served in uniform here during that conflict; many of them are buried at Ridge Cemetery in nearby Asbury Park In 1920 tenacious entrepreneur Samuel Siegel opened his famous tenement hotel/motel at 137 Sixth Avenue which quickly became known as "The Castle". He ran it successfully until his death in 1935 leaving it to his wife Ida who continued operations until her death four years later . After she passed away too young for succession proceedings she bequeathed it to her son Irving Siegel Jr., who operated it until 1984 when it was sold to Summit Properties LLC which planned to demolish it but changed plans after receiving more positive feedback from Preservation League of New Jersey about preserving the building .
Tenafly was originally a part of the Township of Tenafly, New Jersey. On November 3, 1784, it became a separate borough. The first mayor was John Prentice. In 1837, Tenafly annexed the townships of Athol and Monroe in order to form a new borough. The first mayor was George L. Browning. In 1887, Tenafly annexes the townships of Bellefonte and Arlington to form a new borough. The first mayor was James Pugh. In 1932, Tenafly annexes the townships of Clinton and Parsippany to form another new borough with its own mayor and council members. The first mayor was Herbert Biddleman Jr..
