Tenafly is a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. Tenafly is part of the Long Valley-Thames Valley Area. The first European settlers in Tenafly were led by Andrew Mercer and John Armstrong in 1764. They built a small cabin on what is now known as Mercer Street and named it "Tenafly". In 1768, they also founded the township of Tenafly which included present day Monmouth and Ocean Counties. In 1837, tenacious local builder George Washington Smith erected the first house in Tenafly Township – now part of Rodney Township – with assistance from his son-in-law Morris Brown. The house still stands today and is known as Federal Hill House (later renamed Bankers Hill). In 1854, Isaac Haas bought 1/2 mile (1 km) of land from Nicholas Fenton for $700 to build a gristmill that would power the village's two homespun mills; One on Park Avenue and one on Court Road. Haas continued to operate his mill until 1907 when it closed due to economic turnaround during World War I. The post office was established at Tenafly in 1847; it changed its name to Plainfield in 1850 before reverting back to Tenafly afterUniontown's incorporation into the new nation following America's War for Independence in 1848. One of NJ Transit's first lines opened up at Plainfield Station on May 14th, 1923 when passenger trains arrived from Newark Penn Station via Elizabeth Junction Railway Company line #1 terminating at Plainfield Terminal station where freight trains picked up passengers going eastbound or northbound through Elizabeth City Line Railroad tracks #3 & 4 ending just south of US 22 exit ramp onto Route 9A which became Atlantic Ave./Route 601 leading directly into Newark Liberty International Airport

Tenafly, New Jersey was founded in 1764 by Benjamin Tenafly and his wife Sarah. The town was named after a small stream that bisected the township. Benjamin Tenafly ran a mill on the stream and also opened a store. In 1801, Tenafly became part of Trenton Township. In 1814, the township split into two parts due to population growth: Tenafly became part ofthe new Bloomfield Township while West Side continued to be in Trenton Township. The town's first school was built in 1815 and its second in 1816. The first teacher was Mrs. Edwards and the second Mrs. Marshall from Bloomfield Township who taught for one year before leaving for personal reasons. The first library was established in 1880 and it served as the town's only public library until 1954 when it merged with the Trenton Free Library system.. Tenafly had three churches by 1840: Methodist (1840), Presbyterian (1845), and Congregationalist (1850). By 1860, there were six churches in the town with about 100 residents; however, by 1870 there were just twelve churches with about 150 residents because of population growth and Samaria Baptist Chapel closed down around this time. In 1907, Tenafly had one school board member per ward which decreased to two members per ward by 1928 when all vestiges of local government were abolished under statehood . In 1954-1955, tenCommunity Education Centers were set up throughout Garden State counties within ten Community Boards which administered educational services for all citizens within their jurisdictions regardless of race or religion-this program ended when responsibility for education fell back to county governments . Tenafly is located at 39° 20′ 0″ N 77° 05′ 0″ W which makes it one of North America's most northerntheatries According to The Atlas Of North American Villages , "TenafLY has amassive sectional differences among ZIP Codes reflecting its unique topography." One example is that 97323 has more people living below poverty lines than any other municipality within Mercer County while 55005 has more people living below poverty lines than any other municipality within Middlesex County
Tenafly was founded in 1795 by John Tenafly and his wife Deborah. The original site of the town was on a farm near present-day East Patchogue Road. By 1800, Tenafly had become an important stop on the New Jersey Railroad. In 1818, Tenafly acquired land along the Delaware River and began to build a town. The first residents of Tenafly were transient soldiers who were brought overland from Pennsylvania during the American Revolutionary War. From 1822 to 1830, Tenafly served as the seat of Sussex County, New Jersey. In 1832, when Sussex County became part of Mercer County, Tenafly became the county seat for that new county. On March 14, 1842, between 2 and 4 PM, a group of men set fire to buildings in what is now known as Main Street in Tenafly while celebrating America's independence day. As a result of this event and other local incidents during the 1840s and 1850s, township officials decided to rename their town "East Patchogue" after one of its most prominent landowners in that period – Samuel EastPatch Jr., owner of property along what is now Middle Township Road (now Route 23). In 1861 when New Jersey seceded from the United States, East Patchogue became part of Trenton Township as well; however it reverted back to its original name upon reunion with Mercer County in 1870. During World War II there was significant development at Nine Mile Point Naval Air Station located just east of today’s town center taking place off Six Mile Rd., which led directly into downtown across from where Schuylkill River Boulevard currently meets Interstate 95 (I-95 being built right next door). The airfield played an important role in Tenth Air Force operations during World War II; it housed three Boeing B-29 Superfortresses which completed more than 350 missions/destinations delivering supplies to Japan against Nazi Germany
