Tenafly, New Jersey is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 5,422 at the 2010 census. Tenafly is the smallest of the five towns in Mercer County and its core businesses are retail and light manufacturing. The community is surrounded by agricultural land that produces crops such as corn, soybeans, and potatoes. The first Europeans to visit Tenafly were Captain John Smith and his men on their way from India in 1609-1610. They stopped at a spot near present-day Tenafly on November 2nd, 1610 while exploring what is now Pennsylvania. The Dutch also visited Tenafly during this time period but they left no lasting evidence. It was not until 1701 when George III of Great Britain made an exploratory trip down the Delaware River that he discovered what is now Tenafly Township was lying within his kingdom boundaries. On December 1st, 1702, John Woolsey purchased 8 acres (3 ha) of land grant from Nicholas Biddle for £500 sterling which included what is now Tenafly Township and six other villages in Mercer County including Hackensack and Rahway. This area became known as Woolsey’s Mill because it produced flour for England’s army during the American Revolution by milling wheat into cakes which were then baked into bread or rolls called “woolseys” alluding to George Washington who had worn woolen clothes during his military campaigns in America.(Woolsey). In 1814 Mann & Foster erected a grocery store adjacent to their farmstead on State Road 10A which led from Trenton through tenacious farming communities of these days like Rahway (now Northvale), Hackensack Junction (now East Orange), Dumont (now Westwood), South Brunswick Township (now Edison), Paramus Junction (now Parsippany), Red Bank Junction (now Plainsboro) and Easton.(Mann & Foster). In 1861–1862 – Samuel Morse built #2 Post Office along with Exchange Telegraph House next door where he connected New York City with Philadelphia.(Samuel Morse). By 1890 there were over 100 businesses operating out of Town Hall including clothing stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., druggists Greenbaum Bros., Bedford Boot & Shoe Store, hardware store Waddell Hardware Company, bakery Gertrude Jaffe's bakery; cigar store Atchison Cigar Works; ice cream parlor Dreyer Creamery; sawmill Gibson Machine Works; blacksmith shop Gibbs Iron Works.; post office Newsome Express Post Office.; Methodist Episcopal Church - First CongregationalChurch established 1828(First Methodist Episcopal Church); industrialist Julius Rosenwald opened new millinery store Heraldess Laundry CO.)(Julius Rosenwald). In 1916 local resident Harry Colburn developed a major increase in production at Ryan's Furniture Factory located across Route 9 south of town limits leading to eventually becoming one of the largest manufacturers of furniture east coast up until World War II when competition began to emerge from more efficient Manufacturers((Harry Colburn)). Tenafly is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town's population was 8,898. The name "Tenafly" comes from an ancient Native American word meaning "place where two cedar trees grow." The first settler in Tenafly was John Townsend who arrived in 1781. The first post office at Tenafly was established on December 12, 1791, by order of General George Washington. The original postmaster was Nathaniel Barnes. In 1812, Tenafly became the seat of Monmouth County and the population increased to 19 residents. On July 14, 1814, it amalgamated with other towns in Monmouth County when ten local farmers petitioned for incorporation as a township. The merger result in a 1/4-percent increase in population to about 2,000 people within what would become Tenafly Township today. The first school in Tenafly opened on October 9th of that year with 11 students and 3 teachers from nearby versions of Elizabethtown School District #1 (now Elizabeth City School District). Classes were held at home for one year before moving to the First Presbyterian Church which had been built on land donated by Colonel Samuel Parsons and his wife Deborah Parsons (the daughter of Reverend Moses Endicott). In 1815-16 classes were held at Red Bank High School which then moved to its present location across West Broad Street from the old First Presbyterian Church building after being condemned as too noisy for students living near it during morning services. Mr..George Beal served as Superintendent from 1815 until his resignation effective May 30th 1817 due to health concerns; he had recently married Mrs.(Hannah) Beal (daughter of Dr.) George Pemberton II & Mrs.(Eliza Jane) Trainor IV). Reverend James Aiken preached at both schools until 1830 when Rev.(James Aiken I)) took over for him when he left for missionary work in China Valley Baptist Church located south of Shanghai; Rev.(James Aiken I)) returned after three years service there and continued preachings here until his death on November 9th 1840 aged 73 years old having also taught physical education class since 1807 including girls! This made him one of only four men ever ordained into Protestant Episcopalism - another man becoming pastor(John Pennington), Elder(Charles Haddonfield), or Bishop(Georgeworldly Hudson) without actually going through full church installtionprocess! For many years this event was celebrated annually by placing a wreath next to James Aiken’s grave inside St Andrew’s Episcopal Church – now part of Allentown Historic District – right next door where all other churches used to be! At age 83 years old Reuben Burr showed up one day while we were out celebrating his birthday & put a small wreath on top! He has been Mayor 5 times TOTAL!! And everyone knows it!!!
