Tenafly, New Jersey is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Ewing metropolitan area. The Tenafly Rifle and Pistol Club was founded on November 5, 1855 by three men from nearby Rahway: George W. Browning, Elias Howe and John Sibley. The club met at a post office in Tenafly to buy rifles and pistols for use against Indians in what would become known as the Indian Wars of 1857-1858. In 1862, Mayor James Ewing established a school district that included Tenafly along with Rahway and Monmouth Junction. In 1865, Tenafly had its first store on Market Street. That year also saw the founding of the Philadelphian Mutual Fire Insurance Company which provided insurance for guns and other items used in firearms ownership in New Jersey. In 1868, fire destroyed most of the buildings on Market Street including the furniture of John Sibley's store which stood until it was torn down in 1924 to make way for Interstate 95 between Camden and Philadelphia; however some pieces still remain today within view of Tenafly's business district (at 139 Main Street).

The Tenafly Gun Club was a partner organization with the Newark Rifle and Pistol Club from 1903-1905, then became an independent club in 1907. In 1911, the Tenafly Gun Club joined with the Newark Rifle and Pistol Club to form the International Brotherhood of Shooting Clubs (IBSC). In 1924, ownership of the Tenafly Gun Club passed from IBSC to the American Legion.

Tenafly is one of three towns in Bergen County that are both members of the New Jersey League of Municipalities and also have their own governing body, the Township Council. The other two are Hackensack and South Hackensack. The town was first settled in 1795 by Germans who came from Bavaria to work on the Hudson River project. For many years it was known as "Fürstenstadt", meaning "Prince city." In 1814, when George Washington moved his headquarters from Princeton to Mount Vernon near Morristown, he established a military hospital here and named it Fort Washington after himself. And so it continued to be known until 1898 when Tenafly became its own municipality. Today there are more than 20 businesses in Tenafly including: banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., BankAtlantic Trust Corporation), insurance companies (AIG American Inc., GEICO Corporation), tractor dealerships (Dodge Grand Caravan Farm Equipment), real estate firms ( Lennar Corp., Realtors Association of America), as well as several health care providers including Presbyterian Hospital and Atlantic Health Care System - both owned by Blue Cross/Blue Shield NJ Incorporated which functions as a single entity overseeing all seven hospitals in our area with over 1,500 employees across 42 locations across 12 states! Newark's largest employer is Prudential Insurance Company with 2 million square feet located on Broad Street directly across from the Newark public library! Other major employers include Comcast Spectacor Broadcasting Network Headquarters (/usr/src/networkserver5/comcastSpectacor/) - home of WPIX-TV 5 FOX News Channel - Rutgers University Newark /usr/src/networkserver5/rutgersUniversityNj/, Allstate Financial Services LLC (/usr/src/networkserver5/_allstate_/, AIG American Inc.), Empire State Development Corporation (/usr/src/*bin/**/*/, Empire State Development Corporation) and Atlantic Health CareSystem which owns seven hospitals in our community with over 1,500 employees!

Tenafly was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Tenafly. The town is located on the Monmouth County line, northeast of Bridgewater and northwest of New York City. Tenafly was named for Nicholas Tenafly, a Revolutionary War veteran who served as a justice of the peace in neighboring Middletown.
