Summit, New Jersey is a town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. Summit is located on the banks of the Delaware River. It is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Summit were Dutch traders and missionaries in 1624 who named it "Havilandt". They built a trading post here and began selling Indian goods to English colonists. In 1795, after America gained independence from Great Britain, the Treaty of Paris ended hostilities between America and Great Britain and gave Americawestward access to the Delaware River. The area that includes Summit became part of Sussex County when it was formed from parts of Burlington Township (now eastern Mercer County) and Elizabeth Township (now western Camden County). In 1814, Jonas Mason founded a mill on Mill Creek which became known as "Mason's Mills". A store was started by James Sweeny in 1820 which became known as "Sweeny's Store". In 1827, John Fenton purchased land east of Mill Creek for $10 per acre and built a gristmill powered by water turbines which he called "Fenton's Mill." He also began operations of an sawmill which became known as "Fenton's Sawmills". In 1829, Samuel Davenport established a blacksmith shop here which became known as "Davenport's Forge." By 1830, there were three stores open in Summit with over 100 residents. In 1830, George Washington was hieroglyphically carved into two large stones at Mount Hope Cemetery near wherepresent day Summit Street meets Delaware River. This event helped popularize mills in this area as people could go toMount Hope Cemetery to see President Washington while they worked or went shopping nearby. The first steamboat ever used on the Delaware River arrived here in 1840 when Mr. & Mrs.(Unidentified) steamed upriver from Philadelphia using their horse power boat called The Enterprise for delivery of wheat sacks brought downriver by wagonloads from Sayreville along Route 6th Avenue through Princeton Junction then across Trenton Bridge then upriver again all the way to Newark until they reached their final destination about 2 nautical miles upstream from where Tappan Zee Bridge now stands! Steamboats continued arriving every week until December 8th 1850 when their use finally stopped because new transportation methods had been developed! On October 15th 1861 five men - Elijah Woodruff attorney; Moses Brown surveyor; Salmon Pritchard carpenter; Enoch Beall - set out on horseback from Morristown towards Princeton Junction with instructions to purchase 10 acres (30 hectares) at Valley Forge National Historical Park southwest of present day Cumberland Road near present day Weequahic Creek due west of Yorktown Heights without having seen any indication that anything significant would happen during their journey - only expectations that they might encounter some game or abandoned farmsteads within 3 miles (5 kilometers) either side! After traveling 13 miles (21 kilometers), coming within sight but not otherwise reaching any such landmarks as noted on their map[3], they reached an overlook high above railroad tracks encountered an animal running away so quickly it may have been mistaken for a deer!! As soon as they dismounted & approached more closely they discovered it was nocturnal mackerel fish swimming effortlessly among piles of good coal mine dirt just below low tide mark[4], so much so one man managed unsuccessfully(!)to spear one specimen weighing several pounds (~0.45 kg)! Consequently this episode has come to be generally regarded as one Of The Most Amazing Experiences Ever attained By Humans On Horseback !! Elijah Woodruff later served both as Ulysses S Grant’s Vice Presidential running mate in his unsuccessful run for President against Abraham Lincoln

The Summit, New Jersey history includes events that occurred in the town during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The first major event to take place in Summit took place on May 15, 1892 when a group of farmers from New York City founded a farmstead called "Mount Pleasant". This farmstead was located on what is now known as Hazleton Avenue. Another significant event that took place in Summit during this time was the construction of the first railroad line in the area on July 17, 1894. This rail line connected Hazleton with Scranton, Pennsylvania. The town continued to grow throughout these years and by 1925, it had reached its current size. During this time, many businesses were developed in Summit and it became one of the most important towns in northern New Jersey.
