Summit, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,651 at the 2010 census. Summit was incorporated as a village on November 3, 1872. On May 16, 1908, it became a town and was given its current name of Summit by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. The area now comprising Summit was part of Monmouth Township until the merging of Monmouth County with Middlesex County in 1871. It is located on the border of both counties and straddles what are now rural areas in Sussex and Middlesex Counties to the south and east respectively. The original settlers were Loyalist refugees from British America who had fled during the American Revolution. They founded two small villages: Summitville to the east of Princeton Junction (later called Uniontown), which they named for their home province; and Westminister to the west of Princeton Junction (later called Easton). According to the United States Census Bureau, Summit has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 11,521 people, 4,812 households, and 2,752 families residing in the town. The population density was 853 people per square mile (357/km²). There were 5*,965 housing units at an average densityof 367/sq mi (141/km²). The racial makeup ofthe town was 97% White alone or almost entirely white (99% or more); 0% Native American; 1% Asian; 0% black or African American; 0% Pacific Islander; 2% from other races; 1% from two or more races; and 2%, unknown race. Hispanic or LatinoOf any race were 9%.

Summit Township is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,865 at the 2010 census. The name of the township comes from Mount Washington and Summit Lake. The first Europeans to visit what is now Summit were Dutch traders in 1624. The area was part of West Jersey when it was brought under British control after the American Revolution. From 1777 to 1814, Summit was part of Upper Township and then Somerset County until it became a part of Morris County on April 1, 1834. The first post office in Summit was established on October 12, 1814, by George Canning with the name "Cannington." It changed its name to "Summit" on November 7, 1846. The first settler in Summit Township was John Hatton who arrived there in 1825 and built the first permanent house there. By 1830, there were over 50 houses in summit Township! The township has been home to many important people throughout its history including: John D’Arcy (1786-1868), an Irishman who immigrated to America and started a successful business dynasty that continues today; George Canning (1810-1875), one of America's most famous political leaders; Edward Platt (1847-1922), headmaster at Valley Forge Military School and author of "Outline of Social Science"; James Averill Harper (baptized December 6th 1840 – January 2nd 1908), editor and publisher of "Pioneer Press" - one of the oldest continuously published newspapers in America; Myron McCormick (1920-2009), CEO and founder/CEO of Motorola Mobility; Linda Greenstein (born Linda Elizabeth Goldsmith February 14th 1951). She is widely known for her work as Deputy Secretary for Communications at the U.S Department Of Homeland Security from 2009 until her retirement in 2017; Garland Lerner (1920-2000) - an influential educator who helped shape early childhood education into a field mainstreamed today through state programs like Head Start; and more recently notable individuals such as Republican Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen or Mayor Ras Baraka both came from Summit but left before becoming statewide officials
The Summit community was founded in 1892 when a group of farmers, businessmen, and others met at the site of what is now the intersection of Route 9 and Valley Forge Road. The town was named for General George Washington's birthplace, Mount Vernon. The first post office opened in 1893. In 1903, the town had a population of about 350 people. By 1920, it had grown to 1,500 people. In 1923, the Pennsylvania Railroad donated land to the town for a railroad station. The station opened in 1926 and served as the town's main artery until it was discontinued in 1971.
