Summit is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,717 at the 2010 census. Summit is the county seat of Mercer County and it was incorporated as a borough on March 15, 1872. The resident of Summit are typically referred to as "Summitites". The first European settlers in what is now Summit were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664. They named the area "Cedar Grove" after Cedar Point (now part of Paterson), which they had seen from their ship when passing through the river valley. On October 10, 1777, George Washington and his army invaded Trenton during the American Revolution and skirmished with British forces at Princeton while General John Burgoyne was retreating upriver. When news reached Washington that Princeton had been captured by the British, he ordered his army to march on Princeton instead and campaign against Burgoyne further downriver at Burlington Heights before finally landing at Morristown on November 8th. When Mercer County was created on February 3rd, 1837 from portions of Sussex and Middlesex Counties it included all or part of five towns: Bridgewater (founded December 15th, 1736), Camden (founded January 14th, 1738), Cherry Hill (founded May 13th). As these towns grew larger they elected their own mayor/councils rather than rely ontopskirts appointed by the county officials responsible for providing services such as transportation, schools etc.. In 1853 Summit voted to secede from Mercer County over disagreements about how best to provide for its growing population without losing its civic autonomy. A year later it re-joined Mercer County when all but one township voted to become a consolidated town with an equal vote each for mayor/council and school board members however this merger did not take place until 1912 due to objections from Camden which saw itself as having more economic opportunity than Summit despite Census figures showing that Camden's population growth rate was almost twice that of Summits

The name "Summit" comes from the word "summ" meaning junction or intersection and "-mountain" because of its location near the Passaic River. The first European sighting of what is now Summit was by Dutch explorer Hendrick Hudson on July 8, 1624 when he landed on the present-day site of Summit Township. In 1784, John D'arcy founded two mills on the east side of the Passaic River in what is now West Union Township and these mills became known as D'arcy's Mills. A post office called Summit was established in 1814, but it did not until 1827 remain in operation. On May 25, 1874, part of Rahway Township and Saddle Brook Township were merged into Summit to form a new borough. In 1915, all but one block of Borough Hall were destroyed by a natural disaster which included flooding caused by Hurricane Irene; however, most reconstruction took place within weeks afterwards with help from federal Emergency Relief Administration funds which had been earmarked for that purpose. In 1924 the remaining block of Borough Hall burned down again despite being rebuilt four times before it also caught fire three years later. The history of Summit dates back to 1814 when John D’arcy founded two mills on the east side of the Passaic River in what is now West Union Township; these mills became known as D’arcy's Mills after their founder benefitted from an initial investment by his brother-in-law Richard Darcy II (1762-1837). On July 8th 1624 Dutch explorer Hendrick Hudson sighted what is today summit while landing on Manhattan Island; this event likely led to Hudson naming the settlement after himself due to its proximity (just south) to where he had landfalled his vessel this past summer according to some sources though others claim this may be apocryphal story related to George Washington who named Mount Vernon after Sir James Murray (1688-1745) during his visit here in 1799 while lying in ambush for Indians nearby – if true then summit would become only 1/4 mile away from George Washington’s birthplace! All that remains today are foundations and remnants Of D’Arcy's Mills dating back over 400 years! In 1784 John D'Arcy founded two mills on East Side OF Passaic River tributary called “D'Arcy's Mills” These Mills Became Known As “D' Arcy's Mill #2″ After Their Founder Befriended Richard Darcy 2 For Investing In production w/out success…..Now Located Just North Of GW Birthplace By Side Of MD!
On October 20, 1876, a group of men from Summit organized and formed the first Masonic Lodge in the area. The lodge was called "The Lodge of Perfection" and it functioned until 1906 when it was disbanded.
