Summit is a small town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Summit was first settled in 1785 by Scots-Irish immigrants who came to America after being forced out of their ancestral homes in Ireland. The area now known as Summit was incorporated as a township on March 8, 1824, from portions of Rahway and Dumont Townships. On July 1, 1868, Summit Township merged with Rahway Township to form Union County. On January 15, 1973, Summit became the last township in Union County to be converted into a city when it amalgamated with Trenton. Best known for its steel mills which produced locomotives and other heavy equipment until 1984 when they closed down due to decline in industry and rising costs of raw materials; Summit also has a vibrant arts and culture scene with several performing arts venues including the Summit Performing Arts Center (SPAC), which stages popular shows throughout the year; two high school districts - South Plainfield High School (now Hudson Valley Regional High School) and North Plainfield Jr./Sr., both located within the city limits; three stadiums - Scott Stadium (later home to Rutgers University's football team), Maple Leaf Stadium (home of New York Jets football teams) and Giants Stadium - all used for various sports events overcapacity during large concerts or larger events such as Wrestlemania or Super Bowls; an amusement park called Six Flags Great Adventure which opened in 1984 adjacent to Scott Stadium; numerous small businesses including restaurants, clothing stores and home improvement stores dotting Route 287 between Edison Avenue outside of downtown and Mountain View Boulevard inside of the city limits while Main Street remains primarily residential streetside commerce.; In addition there are many private residences scattered throughout much of Route 287 corridor offering plenty of opportunity for golfing or skiing during summer months.; Summit is located at . Summit is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Summit was formed on March 25, 1814 from portions of Hackensack and Midland Township. Summit was originally named for John Haddon Summit (1784-1851), a delegate to the New York State Constitutional Convention in 1824 and an early settler in the borough. The first store opened in what is now Summit on May 5, 1814. On October 10, 1825, the first post office opened in Summit with two residents: James Fenton and his wifeSusan Broughton. In 1830, Drury & Company began operating as a general mercantile business in town and changed its name to Summitville Mercantile Company. In 1860, private land purchases by Samuel Dolan led to the founding of Glen Ridge Steel Works on Clinton Street near what is now West Side Highway (now Route 17). This large steel plant employed over 2,000 people during World War II; it closed after the war but left behind a legacy ofsteel industry that continues today. In 1870-71 there were five businesses in town: three grocery stores operated by Elisha Halliday & Son and one dry goods store owned by George Cohan; both Hallsiday stores burned down within months of each other due to firewood shortages caused by railroad construction nearby. A millinery shop also operated briefly before being destroyed by fire in 1871; this marked the end of local weaving activity until 1895 when a new mill was built west of town along Interstate 95 and continued operations until 1997 when it went out of business too. In 1886-87 an Improvement Association was organized which soon purchased land west of town for development including what is now Mount Laurel Garden State Park; this area would become home to many important institutions such as Rutgers University (then known as Princeton University) until 1954 when it moved south to Woodbridge Township where it remains today.
