Summit is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton-Ewing, NJ–PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Summit was founded in 1836 by three brothers: John Haddon, Horatio Alger and Samuel Sherman. The town has been continuously inhabited since that time. The first post office opened in 1837. In 1901, Summit became a borough and then an incorporated village until it became a township on February 15, 1938. On November 6 of that year, Summit voted to become a city after being approved by its Township Council and Mayor Edward "Buzz" Bowerman. The city of Summit was established on November 6, 1938 with a vote from the Township Council and Mayor Edward "Buzz" Bowerman as its first mayor. The original land for the city was donated by District Attorney Harry Jaffe and Homebuilder Louis Weisman. Later that year, work began on what would become the city's first structure - the Summitsville Library which opened its doors to the public in 1941. Today summit is one of America's most vibrant communities with an active downtown core full of businesses and cultural events as well as ample outdoor opportunities including tennis courts Today Summit is home to many businesses including banks (Branch Banking Company & Trust), health care providers (Atlantic Health Care & Medical Centers), restaurants (Wendy's Garden Inn), retail stores (Kohl's Department Store), office buildings (Summit Civic Center) as well as numerous cultural attractions such as ArtPrizeUSA which takes place annually at nearby Kean University; Asbury Park Raceway; Pioneer Cabinetry Museum In addition to all this there are plenty of parks and pathways available for residents to enjoy including Northumberland Park which borders Interstate 95; Indian Head Lake where you can find boating/kayaking/canoeing activities; and much more!

Summit, New Jersey is a borough in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,172 at the 2010 census. Summit has been governed by the Borough Council since its establishment in 1892. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The borough was created on May 3, 1892 from portions of Elizabeth and Paterson townships. Summit was one of five original municipalities in Atlantic County and it became a city on November 14, 1911. On December 15, 1922, Summit merged with Elizabeth to form a new municipality known as Elizabeth-Summit Township. On March 2nd of that year, all but 2% of the town's residents chose to become Freeholders and continue to be elected by vote only instead of participate in municipal elections which were held every two years then required by township law. On October 4th of 2009 Borough Council enacted an ordinance amending their Municipal Code so that Hard Rock Casino would no longer be able to operate any physical stores within the borough limits as they have done for numerous years now without first obtaining an exemption from state law which allows this type of business operation within cities and townships statewide including Summit Township In light of this change council also voted to establish a Special Committee made up entirelyof Citizens who will review any proposed store openings or expansions within the borough and make recommendations back to Council about what should be done about them
On July 16, 1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution declaring independence from Great Britain. The next day, the New Jersey delegation met in Trenton and swore an oath to support the cause. On October 11th, 1777, Governor Nicholas Fenton requested that the New Jersey Legislature declare independence as well. The Assembly did so on October 15th. The first state of New Jersey was created on November 3rd, 1777 when Pennsylvania and Westchester County joined New York to form the new nation.
