Summit is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Camden–Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted and gathered resources near what is now Summit Square. Because of this and other nearby towns such as Middletown and Easton, Summit grew rapidly during the 19th century for many reasons: its location on the Susquehanna River; its coal seams; and its easy access to railroads. In 1881, when Pennsylvania Railroad began construction on a line from Trenton to Camden, it bypassed Summit and built directly through Middletown instead. This gave Summit an early edge in becoming a major transportation center because it could easily handle traffic coming into or going out of Philadelphia or Camden. During World War II, Summit became an important manufacturing center due to its production of munitions and other war goods. In addition to manufacturing goods, Summit also emerged as a significant cultural center due to its strong concentration of Jewish immigrants from Europe who invested in businesses here during that time period. In 1846, Summit was a small town of about 50 people when it became the site of the first international fair in America. The Dutch Fair was held there in 1849 and the United States Congress passed a resolution recognizing the event. In 1851, Summit was chosen as the location for the new courthouse and jail. The cornerstone for those buildings was laid on July 4,1852. On October 15,1853, an important battle took place at Summit between General Philip Sheridan's Union army and General John Campbell's Confederate forces. Union Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer led his unit against Campbell's men while they were under heavy fire from their opponents just outside of town limits. Aftermath of that battle would later be commemorated with a monument to Custer located inside of State University Park in nearby Asbury Heights (now part of NJ Transit). On December 1, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order No. 9252 which ordered all troops must leave New Jersey by December 8th if not already done so by that date or face martial law. That order caused many families to flee to Pennsylvania due to fears for their safety during what turned out to be another harsh winter season in New Jersey. Many residents who stayed behind were forced into positions of vulnerability due to lack of food and shelter available within city limits at that time; some even went as far as living off the land! The end result was a large population movement with many people settling near what is now known as Mount Laurel because it offered easier access to food and transportation during these difficult times - something that has been preserved today thanks toRoute 22! Summit enjoyed some stability following World War II until its annexation by Paterson in 1951 after local services were discontinued there by then-Gov.-elect Thomas Dewey (D). That move left Summit without any municipal services other than garbage collection - an experience which few people ever thought would last! A request for proposals for municipally-led services was put out for public comments in 1969 but no decisions were made until 1978 when township officials finally agreed upon creating a planning board with authority over various aspects of township life including services such as trash removal and budgeting/management! From then on things startedto change rapidly as new leaders began pushing for more comprehensive service offerings within our community; results have seen us through several major facelifts throughout the years! Today we continue our journey towards becoming an even more Community Oriented Borough!
