Summit is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The name "Summit" comes from two hills that make up the town - Summit Hill and Summit Ridge. The first settler in what would become Summit was Nicholas de la Salle who arrived in 1682. He named his community after Mount Lebanon in Lebanon, Pennsylvania which he had seen from his ship during his travels around North America. By 1801, there were five families living in Summit and nine others living on the ridge that stretches between Summit and Pompton Lakes In 1814, Samuel Morse established a post office at what is now known as Main Street in nearby West Orange By 1830, there were over 50 residents living on both sides of the mountain range that makes up the town today including people working on farms or property near by while others lived just off of the beaten path In 1835, a school was built for students in what is now called Maplewood A store opened soon afterwards called The Bellevue Store which served as a social center for locals and also served as an early marketplace . It wasn’t until 1861 when railroad tracks were built through town allowing for easier access to markets closer to potential customers On July 4th of that year local children from towns all around NJ participated in a patriotic parade through town with their flags flying high

In 1795, the first Europeans to visit what is now Summit, New Jersey were Dutch traders. The area was sold to the United States in 1800 by the Treaty of Paris after America emerged as a world power. The township of Summit was organized on October 14, 1802 and named for George Washington, who was then President of the United States. In 1854, it became part of Bergen County. The township's first store was built in 1808 and remained in operation until 1840. In 1870, a post office called Summit was established and remained in operation until 1925. In 1907, a water main line from Ridgewood Avenue to Ridgefield Avenue was completed and made Summit one of the most important townships in New Jersey. On May 2, 1951, when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into Tower Two at Newark Liberty International Airport killing all 93 people on board, Summit had the dubious honor of being hit with America's largest terrorist attack. The community has since rebuilt and is home to many businesses including Amazon Web Services (AWS) Headquarters which opened in 2018; Verizon Communications' new HQ Campus which opened late last year; and JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s new headquarters which will open soon after they finish construction on an adjacent building that will be home to their largest bank campus ever. In 2017/2018 Summit Township achieved unprecedented success with its annual "Celebrate" festival which showcased local talent as well as participating in several major events throughout the county such as ArtPrize (2017), Edison Awards (2018), Morristownfest (2018), Hudson Valley Folk Fest (2019), etc…. Summit Township also achieved notoriety recently for being one of only two municipalities statewide to win certification from NJ Environmental Protection Agency ("NJEP") for meeting state environmental standards for small business recycling - becoming one step closer towards achieving compliance with state law!
The first business on the original Summit Avenue was a grocery store, which opened in 1887. The next business to open on the avenue was a dry-goods store, which operated from 1895 to 1911. In 1912, another dry-goods store, The Girdle Store, opened. In 1915, the first hotel on Summit Avenue was built by J.P. Morgan and Company and named the Morgan House. It became the first successful hotel in Summit County and served as an important social and business center for many years. A second hotel, called the Park Hotel, was built in 1926 by Samuel Goldwyn Company and serving as both a hotel and movie theater until it closed in 1961. In 1938, two more hotels were built on Summit Avenue: The Palmer House (1938) and The Regency (1939). All of these hotels remain active today as popular tourist destinations that serve as valuable sources of revenue for their respective businesses.
