Summit is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,733 at the 2010 census. Summit is situated on the southern edge of the township of Mount Olivet and shares borders with East Brunswick to the east, Edison to the north, and Harrison Township to the west. It is part of the New York metropolitan area. The first white settler in what is now Summit was John White who arrived there in 1693. The present day town was formed from parts of three other townships on July 1, 1834: Mount Olivet (west of Summit), Harrison Township (northwest of Summit), and East Brunswick (east of Summit). In 1876, a post office called "Summit" was established in what is now West Deptford Township; it continued to be served until 1865. In 1881, a post office called "Mount Olivet" was established; it continued to be served until 1940. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town had a total population of 17,733 as of 2010; this includes 14,811 residents who lived in unincorporated areas and 2 commuters who reside outsidethe municipality limits. As per federal law all municipalities must file statistics for their own purposes but are not required by state or local laws to do so - this makes summit an enclave within Middlesex County without any government services or oversight

The area that would later become Summit was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Susquehanna River between Lancaster County and York County. By 1830, the population of Summit had reached 2,500 people. In 1839, the first school opened in the town. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size of over 7,000 people in 1870. By 1900, Summit had become one of the most prosperous communities in Pennsylvania because of its bullion trade with Canada and its coal mining industry. For many years during this time period, summit residents were known for their elegant style of architecture which can be seen throughout much of central Pennsylvania. Today, there are several remaining downtown businesses including Bankers Trust & Co., National Steel Museum and History Center (now part of American Express), Monmouth University School Of Business Administration (now Monmouth University), Presbyterian Church (Upper Township), Methodist Episcopal Church (Lower Township) and United States Post Office (Summit).
In 1814, the first white people set foot in what is now Summit, New Jersey when they arrived on horseback from Philadelphia. It was then called "Hudson's Bay" and was one of the most difficult areas to settle because of the wild animals and lack of natural resources. In 1865, Summit became a township in Middlesex County. On July 1, 1905, it merged with Union Township to form Summit-Union Township. On January 1, 1938, it became a borough.
