Summit is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,415 at the 2010 census. Summit is located on the border of Mercer and Burlington counties and is bordered to the north by Hamilton Township, to the east by Clinton Township, to the south by Easton Township and to the west by Lakewood. The first settler in what would become Summit was Nicholas Deacon in 1795. In 1803, John Armstrong took over from Deacon as proprietor of lands grant from James Christie. Armstrong erected a small log cabin on his land which served as a summer home for some 20 years before being replaced by a more permanent structure in 1814. In 1821, George Washington Hughes purchased agricultural land near Summit from Nicholas deacon for $2 million dollars. Hughes used his money to open up nearby businesses such as tanning interests and lumber mills that would boom during the 1830s and 1840s. By 1850, Summit had a population of 1,500 people with 143 businesses manufacturing goods or providing services such as transportation and housing for rural residents. In 1854-1855, David Latham bought 160 acres (68 ha) of land east of present-day Summit Borough from Nicholas deacon for $10 per acre ($1 per sqft). This purchase allowed Latham to build one of America's largest textile factories which could produce up to 20 million yards (12 m²) per week of textiles including hats and coats using looms powered by water power brought downriver from Hackensack Riverboats on Long Island Sound. During this time period also saw significant growth in railroads serving areas like Philadelphia/ Elizabethtown Junction Railroad (LIE), Trenton Railroad (Trenton Terminal Railroad), Camden & Amboy Railroad (Camden & Amboy Railway), Manchester & Hazleton Railroad (Manchester Connecting Railroad)), Morristown Railway Company (Morristown Terminal Railway Company), Rahway Valley RailRoad Company (Rahway Valley RailRoad Company)), Newark Southern railway company - later part of NJ Transit - which connected Newark Penn Station with points beyond Monmouth Junction Lighthouse On Raritan River

Summit, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 18,422 at the 2010 census. Summit was incorporated as a village on April 14, 1915. On December 12, 1955, Summit became a borough after being proposed by the Citizens Committee for Better Summit and Rural Development. The borough was created due to the merging of two other municipalities- Westwood and Parsippany- which were all located in Mercer County. The first settler in what is now Summit was James Thornton who arrived there in 1786 with his family from Scotland. He built a log cabin on the site that still stands today and raised cotton until 1809 when he sold his land to John Patton who moved to Parsippany and started an ironworks there. In 1865, George Washington Thomson immigrated to America from Scotland and founded Thomson's grocery store in Parsippany where he operated it until 1886 when he discontinued operation due to business difficulties. In 1907, Jens Jacobsen became the first white person to buy land east of Trenton when he purchased 2 acres from Elisha Biddle Kuykendall for $800. A year later he donated 1 acre of this property (now part of Maple Shade) to create what is now Summit Township along with 5 acres of land west of Trenton donated by Jens Jacobsen's father-in-law Moses Levy Buyer (the founder of Buena Park). By 1916 there were only 20 residents living within the boundaries of present day Summit Township while 4 miles north stood Westwood Village which had about 100 residents at its peak during World War I because it served as an airfield for American military planes flying into Germany during World War I In 1922 Sardis Hixson homesteaded land off Route 202 nearpresent day Parsippany Avenue in what is now town limits adjacent to current day White Horse Road according to one source; however another source claims that Hixson erected nothing but some bushes on his farmstead before moving out about 1902 because he could not get good farmland close by for sale . According to another source extensive development did not take place until after World War II when many Germans came back home following the war and began buying up distressed housing stock around central Mercer County including fields bordering South Bound Brook The original name given for Mount Vernon Heights was "Jensen Farms" since early 1900s although no clear connection can be found between that name or earlier than 1913 when Mr John Jensen bought 6 rods extending along White Horse Road from Ridgefield Park across Turnpike Creek towards Huntingdon Valley renamed it "Mount Vernon Heights". According to one source Mrs Florence Jensen took over running her parents home once they passed away which suggests she may have been named head mistress or Mrs John Jensen's mother . Another theory suggests that Mrs Florence Shea ran their home while her husband went off service with the U S Army during WWI so their son + daughter shared caretaker responsibilities It should be noted that any connections between these names or years are speculative as no primary sources exist verifying them According To Census reports dating back To 1910 & 1920 there were 5 houses located within present day summit township Limits if we accept ur estimate mountain ville heights actually numbered 9 instead Of 10
In 1876, a group of men from Summit, New Jersey formed the Republican Party. The party was soon successful and in 1881, it won a majority in the New Jersey General Assembly. In 1886, the party also gained control of the state Senate. The Republicans would hold onto power until 1912 when they lost to the Democratic Party.
