Summit is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,187 at the 2010 census. Summit is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now comprising Summit was first settled by Brits in 1814 and became a township in 1839. It incorporated as a village on February 14, 1915. In 1908, Summit's only street car line, the Summit Avenue Line opened between Newark and Turnersville with service to both townships and then to Plainfield until it was cancelled in 1942 because of World War II bombings. The present-day village of Summit originated when three parcels of land were purchased from Clearwater Township for $2 each by J.F. Smith & Sons Company d/b/a American Electric Railway Company (AER), which built an electric locomotive factory there in 1912-13. In 1916 AER merged with Edison Illuminating Company to become General Electric Corporation (GE). GE donated most of its assets to the city of Newark in 1924 and also sold its electric streetcar lines to municipal ownership through what is now known as PATH Transit Authority; these lines remain municipally owned today as part of NJ Transit's system. Today, much of the downtown core developed around GE's world headquarters complex on Broad Street between Park Row and Cedar Lane; this area retains some vestiges of industrial development from early 20th century America although many buildings have been replaced or renovated over time including one tower that has spanned two blocks since it topped out in 1957 atop an old post office building that had housed GE since 1896 but had been demolished by that time; Broad Street still forms one block wide main artery running perpendicular along Center Street bisecting Park Row) while smaller streets branching off Broadway form three other neighborhoods: Northumberland Village near High Bridge Gate which includes homes dating back to 1794 Easton Pike Garden State Parkway soon after Route 322 was created nearby becoming bounded again by Center Street on the east side then West Trenton Avenue on the west side finally South Trenton Avenue forming what is now called Englewood Village just northwest corner I-680 Exit 5 away from downtown Newark - alluding perhaps more specifically to Englewood Hills neighborhood located immediately adjacent I-280 exit 5 opposite Elmhurst Mall - homebuilder Eddystone Homes subdivision within minutes walking distance east across 280 road from intersection with I-280 offers even greater visual perspective on triangular shaped plot surrounded by high rises housing developments including One Carey Plaza towersrising above busy streetscape directly across 285 road from edge ofEnglewood Hills Neighborhood Believed To Be The Only Hilltop Home Built Prior To 1920 In Northeast New Jersey And First On Record In That Region’s History

Summit is a town located in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 14,547 at the 2010 census. Summit was founded in 1790 by Nicholas Ball and his brother George as a farming community on the north side of Princeton River. In 1814, when Princeton became an incorporated town, Summit became part of that municipality. The first post office opened in 1815 and closed in 1865. The township was formed from portions of two previous townships on December 4, 1834. Summit had a population of 5,813 at the 2000 census. The main economic activity in Summit has been agriculture for centuries; however, significant industry arrived during the late 19th century with development around transportation corridors such as Route 9 and Route 20 (now I-95). Manufacturing also grew during this time but declined after World War II until it resumed throughout the early 21st century thanks to new investments by companies such as Intel and AMD. Today, much of Summit's economy revolves around services like education, healthcare and government support including law enforcement and social assistance programs; however some manufacturing still remains active within the town limits. Some notable businesses located within town include PNC Bank and Philips 66 Corporation which are both headquartered within town limits while Wegmans Market is also headquartered in nearby Hillsborough Township.
On May 10, 1871, Summit opened its doors to the public. The town had been founded by a group of men who decided to create a new community in central New Jersey due to the lack of opportunity in their home state. Summit quickly became known for its agricultural and manufacturing industries, as well as its rich history. The town has experienced many growths and changes over the years, from being a small rural outpost to becoming an important center for industry and commerce.
