Summit is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,527 as of the 2010 census. Summit is located on the western border of Hunterdon County and is bordered by Rahway to the north, South Brunswick Township to the east, North Brunswick Township to the south, and Glassboro Township to the west. Summit's ZIP code is 07887. The first settler in Summit was Nicholas Swartz in 1781. The original site for Summit was a swampy area near where present-day South Brunswick and North Brunswick townships meet today. In 1811, Samuel Freeman purchased land at what would become Summit from Nicholas Swartz for $1 per acre (0.50 km²). From this purchase, Freeman founded Freeman & Company Printing Presses which published local newspapers until 1865 when it merged with rivals Harper & Brothers Publishers. In 1824, John Fenton bought 10 acres (40 ha) of land at what would become Summit from Samuel Freeman for $2 per acre (0.80 km²). From this purchase he began developing what would become an Iron Hill Manufacturing Park that included mills such as his father’s forge and furnace business; paper making; salt production; cattle raising; and farming practices including dairying and corn husking operations which continue to this day. This region became known as “the Iron Hills” due to its abundance of natural resources such as iron ore and coal that were used in manufacturing throughout much of Northeastern United States during the 19th century. With industrial growth came suburbanization which occurred between 1880-1920 in many areas of northeastern Pennsylvania/New Jersey including Maple Shade Township in Middlesex County, Uniontown Township in Mercer County and Beacon Hill Borough (later part of Glassboro Borough) in Camden County among other places On July 1, 1915 – two days after World War I ended – Summit achieved township status under New Jersey Statutes Act 15:711 et seq., becoming one of 133 municipalities within New Jersey based on population size only without any special taxing or election requirements attached thereto or affecting any other municipality therein while remaining within Hunterdon County subject only to county ordinances governing elections thereat . The mayorship was held by C H Witton from 1916-1925 then by E G Weisman from 1926-1945 before being taken over by J P Farrell who served until his death on January 3rd 1990 . On May 25th 1990 Borough President Harry Golden took over duties from Mayor Farrell effective June 1st 1990 following a campaign promise made by Farrell during his successful bid for re-election four years earlier . In 1995 Mayor Golden appointed J T DeBenedictis interim mayor pending the election of a new mayor . On November 14th 2000 Anthony Lupo defeated Mr DeBenedictis 495 votes to 291 , becoming Mayor effective December 7th 2000 having been elected unopposed 2 months earlier via unanimous vote by all members of Councilmember committee appointed pursuant thereto…. As Set forth By Resolution Number 2002–14 dated October 15th 2002 passed by Councilmember Committee….. At Meetings Held On September 12 th 2003 And November 16 th 2003 There Was A Motion To Add One Hundred fifty Two Dollars ($152) To The Tax Rate Which Failed To Pass…. Following Discussion Between The Mayor And His Staff Learned That There Were Over Three Thousand Dollars ($3000) Left Unspent In Year One Of His Administration…. borough government expenses had increased twenty percent since 2001 despite no corresponding increase in revenue resulting from increased rates……oudaily Expenditures For Services Rendered By Police Department Alone totaled $575 thousand dollars more than expenditures associated with services rendered through borough departments combined prior TO THE APPEAL OF THE MAYOR AND HIS STAFF

Summit, New Jersey is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Newark metropolitan area. The earliest evidence for Summit comes from an ancient Lenape encampment near what is now Mount Holly. In 1704, George Washington and his army passed through the town on their way to Trenton and Princeton. While passing through Summit on his way to Princeton they met John Carteret who then invited them to lunch at his home. At that time Summit consisted of just a few homes and two stores. In 1814, when Union General Robert Eicke invaded New Jersey he destroyed all but one house in Summit while taking prisoners into captivity at a nearby farmstead named Horsehoe Hill (now Mount Holly). In 1851, Drury Lane School opened in Summit which was the first public school in Mercer County. The school closed in 1955 due to financial problems and was replaced by the current school building which opened in 1978. In 1865, Anthony Dolarhyde killed 12 people and wounded 25 others when he bombed a train depot in Camden with explosives hidden inside barrels of cornmeal along with nails and other materials meant for construction projects around Camden proper. This event is also generally considered to be one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in American history as it remains responsible for more than 100 deaths across several states and many injuries including over 50% loss of life among those injured.. On July 2nd 1906 during President Theodore Roosevelt's four day visit to America there was a large coal strike called "The White Nights" at Coalton Mines where workers were locked out after rejecting arbitration terms offered by management
The first post office opened in Summit, New Jersey on July 3, 1816. The town was named after General George Washington's home at Mount Vernon.
