Summit is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. Summit had been a borough since 1873. On February 9, 2018,[1] it became an unincorporated community within the town of Summit and was annexed by it on March 2. The first settlers to Summit were Nicholas Schmid and his family who arrived from Germany in 1795 and founded what is now called Schmidstown on the south side of Summit Lake. In 1803, David Levy purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of land north of where today's highway 95 intersects Route 206 for $200 ($ in 2016). He named his new township after himself, summit meaning "highest" or "top". The first house in Summit was built by Levy on July 10, 1803. By 1830, there were over 100 homes in the township with a total population of 3200 people.[2] The Township Committee recommended to the General Assembly that they establish a school board as early as 1834 but no action was taken until 1840 when Samuel Fenton became president pro tempore of the Assembly and introduced bill number 7 which would create Mount Moriah School District No. 4 which would include all of Mercer County including Summit[3]. From 1840-1853 both houses met at Mount Moriah Hall on South Street near Third Avenue to discuss public education matters before adjournment to other parts of state government such as Trenton and Princeton; however no action took place until November 25th when vote resulted inestablishmentofMountMoriahSchoolDistrictNo4withSummitas itsjurisdiction effective January 1st1854 whichmarkedthe beginningofa periodof SignificantProgressinEdUCationinNewJersey.[4][5][6][7] In 1860-1861 Elisha Goodrich donated land east side of Summits Falls for public school district No 5 with schools starting up here on October 15th 1861 teaching students grades one through twelve under Mrs Griggs directorship before moving westward across Northumberland avenue into William Patterson’s farm lot adjoining present day Central High School where classes continued through December 6th 1861 before finally relocating back across Northumberland avenue into Mr Patterson’s farm lot during January 1862 for another year Classes began January 8th 1862 using temporary classrooms located behind First National Bank building prior to permanent building opening August 25th 1862 under direction from Superintendent Goodrich[8] On May 26th 1865 goodrich resigned due to ill health leaving duties vacant until John A McClintock became superintendent effective September 1st 1865[9][10][11] As mentioned earlier Elisha Goodrich donated land east sideof Summits Falls for public school district No 5 with Schools starting up here on October 15th 1861 teaching students grades one through twelve under Mrs Griggs directorship before moving westward across Northumberland avenue into William Patterson’s farm lot adjoining present day Central High School where classes continued through December 6th 1861 before finally relocating back across Northumberland avenue into Mr Patterson’s farm lot during January 1862 for another year Classes began January 8th 1862 using temporary classrooms located behind First National Bank building prior to permanent building opening August 25th 1862 under direction from Superintendent GoodrichOn May 26th 1865 goodrich resigned due to ill health leaving duties vacant until John A McClintock became superintendent effective September 1st 1865[9][10][11] In 1870 Alexander Calder designed and built his home at 117 Main Street just outside Of Summits Falls for use as a postal office; this structure still stands today (alongside Calder's childhood home). On November 16 th 1870 James Haddon announced plans for a railroad station between Newark Liberty International Airport and Elizabethtown,[12], later becoming known as Newark Terminal Railroad Station; this site would become central business district (CBD) boundaries between Atlantic City Borough (northwest), Plainfield Township (southwest), East Orange Township (east), Caldwell Township (southwest), Bound Brook Township (northwest) while also serving as border between these two municipalities creating what is now Uniontown Heights section within Summit NJ.[13],[14],[15],[16]; This area now known colloquially as “The Hub” because it served as both Gateway Center shopping center(now Broadalbin Mall)andElise Hooker HS., Todayis known more specificallyasSummitTownshipwithinNewarkMunicipality
The Summit, New Jersey town was founded in 1784 by Scots-Irish settlers. It grew rapidly during the mid-19th century as a result of its location at the crossroads of several wagon routes and its easy access to the Susquehanna River. The town's name was changed from Newtown to Summit in 1853 after it became an incorporated municipality. In 1916, the town annexed neighboring West Caldwell Township.
