Summit is a borough located in the New Jersey metropolitan area. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a population of 14,711. Summit was incorporated as a borough on April 4, 1892, from portions of Rahway and West Deptford townships. The name comes from two places: Summit Hill and Mount Hermon. In 1915, the Borough elected its first female Mayor, Anna Maria La Rosa. On July 1, 2013, Summit became one of fourteen municipalities to sign an ordinance creating common benefits for all residents including senior citizens and children living in local housing developments or apartments. The summit community began as small hamlet on top of Saddleback Mountain with only 10 residents in 1892 when it was formed out of parts of Rahway and West Deptford townships adjacent to what is now Union City. By 1915, Summit had annexed neighboring communities Mt Hermon (now part of Freehold) and Valley Forge to form its fledgling borough government which functioned as an administrative center for all six municipalities within the new Borough boundaries. In 1922 when Township President George Wetherington moved his office from Rahway to join Summit in order better serve both townsships he left behind his large mansion which still stands today across Saddleback Mountain from where the original hamlet grew up - ever since known as "Mt. Hermon Manor." Wetherington's home served as both council chambers until 1928 when legislation changed township presidents into mayors effective that year with James Pappagee becoming mayor after serving one term under Wetherington. By 1933 there were 16 residents living in Summit; however by 1941 only 10 remained following World War II when Union City was taken over by Paterson while West Deptford merged into Rahway making Summit once again a single municipality with 15 residents living therein including 6 council members who staffed most aspects of their day-to-day operations out of their homes - just like it had been prior to 1862 when it consisted solelyof 6Residents! As township president George Wetherington's huge Mansion continued to sit across Saddleback Mountain from where the original hamlet grew up - ever since known as "Mt. Hermon Manor" - so too did Park Row House situated on what is now Orange Street offer Residents plenty opportunity for leisure activities such as golfing & tennis within walking distance or kayaking & fishing downriver nearby at Clearwater Marina if needed during any given season! For years this well-maintained house also offered schooling opportunities for incoming high school seniors who could stay during K-12 terms over summer break! finally upon Mr.Wetherington's death on December 12th 1965 his son/in law John Sussman took over presidency effective that date and continuing through until 1983 until Borough Manager Joseph Fenton assumed control effective October 1st 1984 having succeeded his father John Sussman Sr.? From then until Present day no individual has held presidency beyond Mr., Joseph Fenton having been appointed Mayor by virtue OF Office Of Management And Budget dated November 17th 2009? Municipal leaders have included 3 current Borough Council Members along with 2 current Assistant Borough Council Members? With more than 14K Residents currently residing within Summittown limits we can safely say that things haven't really changed much at all...except maybe ADVERTISEMENTS about upcoming events happening at Mt Hermon Manor!!!!

Summit is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,369 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Summit was Nicholas Prentiss, who arrived in 1781. His heirs established a small farmstead and mill here in 1802. In 1814, business enterprises of various kinds were organized as the Summit Township Company; it became a borough on November 3, 1821. In 1834, Summit township was divided into two sections (north and south) by the Delaware River and annexed to Mercer County; within 10 years it had reached its present size with 8 square miles of land area. The first post office opened in Summit on February 14, 1816; it remained open until October 15th of that year when mail services were transferred to Camden because of an increase in population. On July 1st 1861, Summit became part of the newly formed Borough of Camden which at that time included all but what are now parts of South Brunswick Township and Pennsauken Township. On January 1st 1870, these areas were merged into Camden through an act of the Legislature as a result of increasing industrialization within those municipalities and their proximity to major railroads serving Philadelphia and Camden respectively. In 1895 Park Avenue was completed between Cambria Heights Road (now Ridgefield Avenue) and Bound Brook Parkway making Summit one stop from Northeast Pennsylvania Railroad lines located just north or east off I-95/I-280 near Bound Brook Parkway intersection - this allowed for easy access by motorists traveling along Interstate 95 to reach downtown Philadelphia via Park Avenue without having to go through Trenton or other towns along NJ Turnpike system
Summit was founded in 1788 by Lieutenant Colonel John Smith as a military post on the Delaware River. It became a national capital in 1800 and is still the seat of government for New Jersey. The state's first governor, James Manning, served from 1802 to 1809. The state Legislature met at Summit until 1821 when it moved to Trenton. In 1889, the original United States courthouse were destroyed in a fire and replaced by an enlarged structure which remains today.
