Summit is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,500 at the 2010 census. Summit is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 20.5 square miles (50 km²), including 18.2 square miles (45 km²) of land and 0.8 square mile (0.3 km²) of water.[1] The first European settlers in what is now Summit were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664 and named it for their hometown of Delft in Holland on the North Sea coast. In 1720, John Woolridge founded a small village near present-day Princeton Township that became known as Woolridge Manor after him and his family moved there from Robbinsville Township in Middlesex County. On April 14, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War when skirmishes were taking place around Princeton between Patriot forces led by George Washington and British troops under General Howe's command, an estimated 2,000 militiamen from South Brunswick Armory reached Princeton township to protect Woolridge Manor against British attack; they destroyed all but two buildings within minutes before withdrawing into Princetonshire back home.[2] In 1785, William Stillman built a sawmill on White Horse Creek which he called Stillman Mills after himself and his father-in-law Colonel Nicholas Stillman who had purchased it from Humphrey Bogart’s father early in that decade for $1 million dollars[3]. With mills located throughout Sussex County starting with stilling mill at Battle Ground on Delaware River just north of Trenton,[4], Summit was one of several towns along with Camden Township (now Rahway) and West Milford Junction to benefit from increased agricultural production caused by better transportation facilities coming online during this time period all across Northeast America thanks to improved roads and railsroads such as the Erie Canal which linked up with Atlantic Railroad lines at points like Dovercourt Junction in Union City NJ[5]). The first farmable land in Summit was acquired by Lambert & Dolan where Isaac Dolan started cultivating corn on large lots near Meetinghouse Road/Route 9 about 1840; around 1860 David Levy began acquiring more acreage following owner Jethro Levy's purchase of adjoining lands east of Route 9 from Anthony Pugh – originally part of Rahway Township – when he sold it back to Pugh after purchasing Rahway Borough Council seat from Samuel GreenOUGH [6][7]. A blacksmith shop opened up almost immediately adjacent to Levy’s farmstead providing materials for nearby businesses including tannery operations run by Elijah Hicks & Sons until Hicks ran out of business sometime around 1870 due “to bad weather conditions while I continu'd making leather goods…. These particular factors probably account for some local decline or stagnation during this period”[8][9]; however another blacksmith shop opened up soon afterwards operated by Solomon Gantz & Son along Route 9 west side about 1890 before finally closure some years later due “to lack cf customers despite heavy operation”[10][11]. As manufacturing opportunities declined throughout most northeastern America during this time period as a result overall economic decline took hold with manysmaller towns struggling through hard times even though summit managed to maintain its own school system until 1917 when consolidation across New Jersey forced its closure effective January 1st because Of budget constraints within then newly created public education agency known as "New Jersey State Board Of Education".[12][13] However much like other smaller towns throughout Northeast America not everyone faced difficulty during these difficult times especially given how well funded larger municipalities were typically able to stay afloat through government largesse instead which suited many farmers living closer to larger cities whose access to those resources afforded them an edge over their counterparts [/ref:https://www.townsquarepress.com/History/Summit%20New%20Jersey%203002010/Article_Summit%20NJ%20200090219_1

The first gun hammer was designed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1792 and became known as the conical hammer. It had a pointed head with a concave base that allowed it to be used to crush the stock of firearms while they were still in their factory packaging. The first gun hammers were also very crude and required a lot of practice to use them effectively. However, over time, the design of gun hammers evolved and began to be more refined. By 1815, two types of gunshammer had been developed: the French grenadier’s hammer and the English hand-held golfer’s hammer (hand hanger). The grenadier’s hammer was much more advanced than the hand-held golfer’s Hammer because it was designed for crushing cannon balls rather than barrels. This made it ideal for use on heavy artillery pieces like cannons and muskets. The English Hand- Held Golfer’s Hammer eventually replaced both the French Grenadier’s Hammer and the English Hand- held Gun Harmer in 1853. This was due to a variety of reasons such as its better performance when crushing munitions, its cheaper price tag, and its easier manufacturing process. However, even though this tool eventually became popularized worldwide, there are still many people who don’t know about its history.

On February 14, 1998, it changed its name to Summit Township because of the township's status as an incorporated municipality within Monmouth Countyrather than as part of either Mercer or Monmouth Counties alone. Today, Summit is home to over 100 businesses and employs over 350 people who are responsible for providing services such as retail sales, health careogenship/dentistry/doctoring/commerce/, public works/roads/tpds/, manufacturing/, agricultural production/, environmental restoration/.
The first known residents of Summit were the Lenape Native Americans. The early settlers were Dutch, English, and German people who arrived around 1684. In 1837, the township was formed from part of Middlesex County. In 1916, Summit became a municipality. The population increased to over 10,000 in the 1950s and 1960s as a result of economic development in the area.
