Summit is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton–Ewing, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Summit post office has been in operation since 1813. The first white people to live in what is now Summit were settlers from Westchester County who arrived in1781 and 1786. A gristmill was built on the river near present-day Maple Shade in 1792 and other early businesses included a blacksmith shop and tannery. He named it "Tucker's Run". Later that year he erected a log cabin and started to cultivate land which he sold for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). By 1830 his farm totaled 107 acres (41 hectares). Tucker also started a sawmill at this time which produced lumber until it burned down in 1865; later replaced with an iron mill. In 1830 James Gaffney founded the paper company Gaffney Brothers Paper Company on lands purchased by Tucker from Nicholas Steeles II., which operated until 1862 when it merged into Pulitzer Bros./New York Times Syndicate as Gannett Paper Company Inc.. Summit, New Jersey is located in the Township of Summit on the border of Mercer and Essex counties. In 1871, it was organized as a town because of its location at the junction of two wagon trails. The first post office was established in 1875. By 1915, Summit had a population of 1,800 and became the largest municipality in Mercer County by 1923. The township was abolished in 1954 and merged into the larger township of Summit-on-Hudson. In 1961, an act to establish a school district for Summit was passed by the General Assembly. On July 1, 1966, Summit School District #2 opened with kindergarten through eighth grade students from both townships as well as students from nearby Freehold Borough. On November 14th, 1970, voters approved a referendum to annex portions of neighboring Huntingdon Township to create another school district under the then new name: Hunterdon-Summit Regional School District #1 (laterHunterdon Hills Regional School District). The original High Bridge over State Routes 611 and 909 which connected Upper Hudson Valley with South Jersey originated from this community. The current bridge replaced an earlier one that also served as a transportation link between townspeople and their farms in what is now part of Union County. The Summit County Courthouse is a historic courthouse in Summit, New Jersey. It was built in 1869 and is a two-story, Italianate style stone building with a slate roof.
