Summit is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,849 at the 2010 census. Summit is part of the Camden–Wilmington Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Stockton-based Summit Manufacturing Company was founded in 1881 by two brothers, Nathan and Elias Stockton. The company became a major player in the American toy industry with products such as Thomas & Friends and Hot Wheels. In 1969, Samsonite Corporation purchased Summit Manufacturing Company for $27 million. In 1994, Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation merged with Time Warner Inc., creating the world's largest media conglomerate. The merger led to concerns that Murdoch might try to buy control of Fox Broadcasting Company, which would have threatened Turner Broadcasting System's dominant position in cable TV programming. In 2000, Comcast Spectacor acquired Time Warner Entertainment Co., including Fox Broadcasting Company and several other entertainment assets for $45 billion US; this made Murdoch the single largest individual shareholder of both companies. At the same time, Murdoch announced his intent to sell Fox Broadcasting Company to 21st Century FOX for $52 per share—a deal that was completed on August 29, 2002). On October 25, 2006 ComcastSpectacor announced it had agreed to purchase Sky Atlantic from BSkyB Plc for £4 billion pounds (USD$5 billion). This gave Sky Atlantic its own network and created an even more dominant presence within British television news programming than Time Warner Entertainment Co.'s HBO network had done before. It also ended any prospect of Rupert Murdoch buying into either company ever again after he bought shares in Times Newspapers plc during their hostile takeover of Associated Newspapers Ltd.. Summit Township was incorporated as a part of Middlesex County, New Jersey on November 3, 1868. The township is named for Mount Summit in New York City. In 1916, the borough of Summit was annexed into Summit Township and became an integral part of the new township. The population of Summit at the 2000 census was 1,551. The first settler in what is now SUMMIT Township was Nicholas Fenton who arrived in 1795. He built a cabin on property that is now known as Indian Hill Cemetery. Many other pioneers followed Fenton and their families over the years and some still live in SUMMIT Township today including: George Washington Carver (1841-1915), Abram Rankin (1865-1946), Calvin Coolidge (1894-1967), Irvington Mayor Harry Suggs (1920-2006) and Tom Hvitneson (born 1938). In 1868, when Middlesex County was created from parts of Hunterdon County, Summit became one of its initial townships. It voted to become an independent municipality on April 15th, 1870 which resulted in it becoming one of the smaller municipalities within Middlesex County by area. On July 10th, 1876 Summit voters passed a resolution requesting that the Borough of Summit be annexed into Summittown because both communities had similar needs such as schools and government services combined. This request was accepted by Borough Council with only two dissenting votes on October 14th following a public hearing which took place at Assembly Hall on High Street in downtown Summittown. On January 8th 1907 another referendum was held to annex intoSummit Township but this time with majority vote by residents itwas accepted with no objections from Borough Council members. On January 24th 1907 Harrison Dearing moved for an act to be filed to amend the Official Records showing that he has been successful suing several businessesowned by Jews throughout America for unfair competition etc., motion carried unanimously without objection from Councilmembers Dearing or Sewell who were not present during deliberations; this amendment became law effective February 9th 1907 and added "the Borough of" after "Summit". On March 16th 1913 a fire destroyed much business along High Street between Broadwalk Avenue & Market Streets forcing nearly every resident out until morning hours due to intense heat build up inside buildings prior to extinguishing all fires early that morning; this event remains one Of The Most Remarkable Firefighters Engagements occuring In Summittown History! This event also helped spur development alongHigh Street including later construction of THE PARK - A brand new shopping centerdeveloped adjacentto Highland Mall authorities estimated its economic impact will be $160M By 2020!
