Summit is located in western Mercer County and is bordered by Burlington to the east and northeast; Woodbridge Township to the northwest; and Atlantic City to the southwest and southeast. The township of Summit was formed from parts of Rahway Township on April 14, 1867. The borough was formed from portions of Trenton on February 1st, 2006 as part of a merger between Trenton and Rahway Townships. According to the 2000 United States Census there were 4,898 people living in Summit Borough (3%of its total population). According to the 2007 American Community Survey there were 6,057 people living in Summit Borough (4%of its total population). In 2000-2007-2010 census data it appears that both populations have increased or remain stable even with slight decreases over time

Summit, New Jersey is a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The population was 5,693 as of the 2010 census. Its name comes from Old French Summit and German Schalmhorn or thorny hornbeam. The first Europeans to visit what is now Summit were Dutch traders in 1624. They called it "Schaumhornbosch". In 1702, the British launched an attack on the Dutch settlements at Fort Christina and captured many of their men and goods. The British renamed the area "Hunterdon Borough" for General Thomas Monmouth who led their assault. The first American settlers arrived in 1764 after Captain John Smith's expedition discovered a route to Asia through present-day Delaware River Valley. On July 10, 1764, Samuel Davidson established the first permanent settler colony in what is now Summit by founding a farm on land that he had purchased from William Penn alongside the then-new Susquehanna River. The town was founded as part of Huntingdon County and became an incorporated village on April 14, 1814. It was named after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate which lies within its borders today. In 1845, $5 million worth of silver ore was mined at nearby Bald Eagle Mine and sent downriver to Philadelphia for processing into coins before being exported back upriver to make money off exports taxes levied on those coins instead of market value when they reached Philadelphia proper hands again – this process continued until 1956 when newly minted United States gold coins replaced silver U.S.-issued coins beginning with Eisenhower dollar notes (and continuing through current circulating United States currency). On May 15th 1905 one thousand people assembled at Columbarium Cemetery to celebrate the opening of Cumberland Avenue School which would serve as Summit's only school until 1925 when IntermediateSchool #2 openedNext door providing primary education for all residents from grades PreKindergarten thru 8th grade while also accommodating special needs students thru 12th grade; this facility is currently used as home schooling offices for local families with children too young or old to attend public schools
Summit was founded in 1824 by George Washington and his wife Martha. The town was named for a summit of the mountain on which it was located. It quickly became an important center for agriculture, commerce, and industry. In 1832, the first bridge over the Schuylkill River was built in Summit. By 1851, Summit had a population of 2,500. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant visited Summit to observe a parade being held in honor of his successes at Gettysburg. After the parade, Grant ordered his troops to move from their encampment near Mount Airy to within three miles of Summit so that they could rest and eat before continuing their march down Pennsylvania Avenue to Yorktown. By 1870, Summit had reached its peak as an industrial center with more than 100 businesses operating in the town limits alone. However, during the Panic of 1893-1894, business deteriorated rapidly and many residents left for rural areas across New Jersey. Today only a few remaining businesses remain in downtown Summit – including two restaurants – while most of the homes have been demolished or replaced with office complexes and other types of housing developments.
