Summit, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,871 at the 2010 census. Summit is the county seat of Mercer County. It lies on the Susquehanna River and is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Summit were groups of Iroquois hunters and gatherers who traveled through what are now central Pennsylvania and northern Delaware during their annual migrations between 1675 and 1700. The area that would become Summit was first settled by Europeans in 1764 when Captain John Stevens founded a trading post on the Susquehanna River near present-day West Milford Township. In 1814, after being land grants from President James K. Polk to several hundred families within Mercer County as part of hisclemency for General Phillip Frelinghuysen's treasonous actions during the War of 1812, Summit became part of newly formed Mercer County with its current boundaries. In 1883, when New Jersey dissolution came about as a result of a state government restructuring following passage of the federal Readjustment Act by then-Gov. Andrew Johnson (D), Summit became one of 10 towns remaining in Mercer County along with Easton (now Altoona), Bordentown (now Burlington), Cherry Hill (now Hackensack),East Brunswick (now Glassboro), Holmdel Township (now Union City), Manalapan Township (now Plainsboro) and West Milford Township (now White Sands). As part of this change, all butHolmdel Township were abolished while Manalapan Township continued to exist until it too was abolished by merger with Union City in 1998; both municipalities had been located within present-day Summit since before that time. Although much has changed since these days – including an increase in population due to burgeoning suburbs around nearby Camden – many aspects remain similar including downtown shopping districts filled with local businesses and restaurants as well as scenic riverfront location minutes away from both Philadelphia and Camden proper while still maintaining easy access to major roads and airports across both cities as well as other major metro areas such as Trenton NJ or Atlantic City NJ.. Today’s downtown district features two main streets – Market Street straddling the river opposite Independence Mall – which have been called “the heart” or “the artery” for town residents because they provide access to most services considered essential for living sustainably including supermarkets, restaraunts/cafes/diner options etc., libraries newsstands & bookstores etc., oh also 4 large parks that encompass half the downtown district plus additional smaller parks scattered throughout town: North Park - across from State Capitol building; South Park - next door to Penn's Peak State Park; east side park contiguous with business district & hospital area - Joseph Papp Arena; west side park contiguous with residential area - Linden Terrace

On October 25, 1876, the first Summit meeting of the New Jersey Legislature was held in a small room on the second floor of the State House. The next year, on November 3, 1877, another Summit meeting was held in response to Governor Stevens' proposal and resulted in the passage of a new constitution which became effective on January 1, 1880.
