However this number masks significant heterogeneity among its constituent businesses which can be seen in its top economic sectors: health care/medical equipment manufacturing (10th highest), accommodation/motels (9thhighest), recreation/recreation services (8thhighest), professional services (6thhighest) and education/training services (5thhighest). This concentration of businesses also suggests that many residents feel comfortable working within their own local economies rather than depending on outside sources for goods or services.

The township had four schools: Northside School (grades K-12), Southside School (grades 9-12), West Side School (3rd through 8th grades), and East Side School (5th through 6th grades). A post office was established at South River Township on December 12, 1876, and remained open until it closed on September 26, 1961. In 1905, the New Jersey State Legislature passed a bill to rename all of Mercer County as "South River". The name change came into effect on October 1, 1905. At that time, the township had a population of 1,200 people; it grew to 2,500 by 1955. Today the township has a total population of just over 3100 residents. There are twenty-one businesses located within its borders - many of which have been around since before the township's establishment! One example is the Midtown Pizza place which opened back when the township had just under 1000 residents; it still stands today and provides great pizza for those who visit!
The South River was a small stream in central New Jersey that emptied into the Raritan River. The river was namedafter the ancient region of Syria, where the Dutch first settled in 1609.
