This telescope became famous for its images of stars above Earth surface when it was operated by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the Apollo moon missions

South River is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. South River was founded by Dutch settlers in 1664 as Dovertown. The name came from nearby Raritan Creek which the first Europeans named "Rathskill" after their landlord, Sir John Rathburne of Middlesex County (now Rahway). The Dutch built Fort Amsterdam on the banks of South River in 1664 and garrisoned it against English attacks for years. They also constructed a small houseboat called "Sint Joost" (Saint John) on the river to provide transportation to and from Manhattan for traders and government officials. In 1734, South River became part of Bergen Township when that township was formed from parts of Hunterdon and Morris counties. In 1801, United States Senator James Kroll purchased land east of present-day South River for $10,000 and began to build what would become Kroll's Farmstead National Historic Site (later renamed Kroll's Mills), now known as George Washington Park across from modern day Uniondale High School. The farmstead included a large barn, fivehouses/one cottage with outbuildings including a blacksmith shop and millrace; chapel; gristmill; three ponds - one artificial; two miles (3 km) long by one mile wide - fed by rivulets running through the woods near present-day Uniondale; four white wheat houses - two each facing north and south along Raritan Street - dating back to 1792 or earlier; three Negro slaves were brought over as free persons before they were enslaved in 1784 at Fort Mifflin in Peekskill Township where they continued working until 1863 when they were emancipated due to British military occupation during the War for Independence The first post office opened in 1825 with Isaac Meyers serving as its first POSTMASTER . From 1830-1855 all postmasters were appointed by Governor Livingston who resided at Albany until his death in 1835 Governor Livingston had an office on Bloomfield Road just east of today's Main Street in what is now West Milford Township where he met with local farmers weekly about business items such as crops etc... He also held meetings at various locations including Tryon Tavern on Post Road north oftoday’s Route 8 so residents could come see him directly.. These meetings helped help develop some early policies which later became law Kroll’s Farmstead National Historic Site offers excellent access to original buildings dating back to 1800s while also providing opportunities for educational programs on many aspects surrounding this important period in Hunterdon County history
