The first permanent English settlement in what is now Mercer County was established by settlers from Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, in 1711. In 1814, during the War of 1812, American forces burned villages near present-day East Rutherford and West Point while engaged in operations against British forces. Withdrawing American troops from Canada after the war ended, some of these soldiers returned to America and began to build homes in what is now South River Township. During World War II (1939-1945), South River served as a base for Bombardment Squadron 5 (Betty) of the United States Air Force's Eighth Air Force; it had also been used by Fighter Group 127 (Hercules) which operated Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters during strategic bombing missions over Europe and Japan during that time period. In 1951, SouthRiver post office opened and continued operation until it became a part of New Jersey state government upon its merger withjersey State into Union on December 14th 1959 Many aspects which make up today's townships were developed or Sugarloaf Ridge Shopping Center opened there first along with many other businesses that have sprung up since then including: Mechanicsville Campground just north east off Route 22 about 2 miles west of where US 42 intersects Route 9 about 8 miles south east of I-95
