It has been more than a century since South River, New Jersey's first high capacity conversions took place. In 1840, South River again became an independent township when it boundaries were changed by act of Assembly to include all unincorporated territory lying between Morris Township and Freehold Township (excluding what are now called Westwood and Saddle Brook Villages) as well as all unincorporated territory lying north or east of Route 22 including Bound Brook Park and Maple Avenue. At this time, what are now known as Ridgefield Village (northwest corner), Maple Shade Farms (southwest corner), WestwoodVillage(southeast corner), EastonVillage(northeast corner), Allendale ( southeast corner), Parsippany ( northwest edge) and Woodlawn Heights were included inSouthRiver township; these areas have since been annexed into neighboring townships. "According to one source", southern sections "of Ridgefield Village - north side opposite parsippany line - remain undeveloped today". This area has come under development over time because its location makes it prime real estate for students commuting to nearby Morristown University School District campuses; however much traffic has been diverted away from Ridgefield Village due to improved roadway access near Parsippany."
