South River is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. South River is part of the Camden-Bergen metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now South River were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1678. They named the place "Trenton" after Prince Trenton of England, who had fought for the British against Spanish forces at Monmouth Battlefield on July 4, 1685. The Dutch also established a small trading post here in 1682 and named it "Newburgh." In 1713, some more colonists from Perth Amboy settled here and renamed it "South River".
