The first European to set foot on what is now South River was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The name "South River" was given by John White in 1774 while surveyor for the British Crown. The present day town was established as a borough on May 4, 1834 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature from parts of Hackensack and Passaic Counties following the consolidation of those two municipalities. In 1849, South River became one of twelve townships into which Middlesex County was divided under an act entitled "An Act to Consolidate and Unionize Certain Township Lots in Middlesex County," approved by the General Assembly on December 2 that year. On November 6, 1870, South River became a municipality when it joined with Hackensack and Passaic Counties as part of a larger plan designed to increase commuter transportation within Greater Newark (then known as Essex County). The township's first mayor was Isaac Asbury and its first storekeeper were Abram Cui (1812-1886). In 1881 Regional Water Company laid out extensive rights-of-way for its water supply system through portions of SouthRiver Township including currentday Northumberland Avenue and Springdale Road; this contributed significantly to growth in southbound traffic on Springdale Road during the late 19th century due to increased accesses from nearby Rahway Village Shopping Center between Oneonta Avenue and Edison Boulevard across Route 10 south of Weequahic Park; today FirstEnergy Stadium lies just east of that intersection adjacent to Interstate 95 northbound lanes only accessible from Rutherfordton Road (Route 9 north) via Exit 309I/E; today much lower levels along both Routes 10 and 9 are accessed via ramps built underneath I-95 between exit 309I/E (southbound lanes) and Rutherfordton Road (northbound lanes), providing easy access even for small cars or buses despite high speeds approaching exit 308A/B on I-95 motorists must slow down before enteringExit 309I/E

In 1874, Newark became an incorporated town when it merged with Secaucus and West Orange. The population of Newark increased rapidly due to immigration from Europe and North America. By 1920, the city had a population of over 100,000 people. Growth continued through World War II until demand for military housing led to neighborhood enclaves such as East New York and South Orange being born within their respective communities while Newark's downtown core declined in size. In 1990, the City of Newark merged with 20 other municipalities forming Essex County which has since grown into one of New Jersey's most populous counties.
