In 1830 two brothers named John and Andrew Morse boughtScudder's tannery for $3,000 cash and began operating it as an agricultural warehouse/factory which they continued until1839 when they donated it to Rutgers University as their first student dormitory (now called Old Main). On October 15, 1840 James Fenton purchased four hundred acres (18 hectares) of land just east ofpresent-day South River from Alexander Hamilton for $140·00 cash. This purchase marked the beginning of development along this stretch of riverfront wherePlainsboro Road meets South River Boulevard today. On January 3rd, 1841 Abraham Davenport Jr., sonof Samuel Harshe established a gristmill on present day Westminster Avenue which became known asthe “Davenport Mill” In September 1861 David Levy acquired 380 acres (14 hectares) adjacentto Plank Road for $270·00 cash from Jeremiah Whitehead who had purchased 640 acres (26 hectares) adjacentto Newark Creek from Nicholas Noyes . In 1865 Lewis Pemberton acquired 520 acres (22 hectares) adjoining Plank Road for $425·00 cashfrom Augustus Kelley who hadpurchased 760 acres (30 hectares) adjacentto Newark Creekfrom Nicholas Noyes . The original name for SouthRiver may have been obtained from an Indian word meaning "the broad mouth". In 1802, when Camden Township was formed from parts of Somerville Township and Gloucester Township, it included all or part of what are now North and South riversbanks except Long Beach Island. The township's first mayor was John Nicholson (1768–1847). In 1824, when Camden became a borough – one of three new municipalities created as a result of Philadelphia's incorporation as a city – it annexed parts of Somerville Township until its boundaries were determined by actuary map drawing on December 20, 1825; this left only Long Beach Island within Borough limits but without mayoral power. In 1861 when Newark municipal charter granted voting rights to African Americans following Reconstruction – prior to that most black citizens were limited to property ownership or service in white households – Mayor James Sweeny ordered street lights installed along both banks of Long Beach Island so that blacks could find their way around during night hours.
