It prospered until 1814 when raids from Native Americans destroyed much of its infrastructure and commerce. In 1824, portions of Newark Township were annexed into Middlesex County as part of an effort to improve transportation connections between New Jersey's growing cities and county seats along the Delaware River basin. On April 7, 1834, South River became one of four towns within Middlesex County when it was created from parts of Rahway Township and Newark Township following the consolidation of those two municipalities into a single municipality under state law that year. Since its creation, South River has undergone several expansions including annexation of adjacent communities such as East Rutherford (in 1978), Edison (in 1997), Paramus (in 2002) and Hackensack (in 2006). In 2006, township voters decided to annex Northvale which caused a temporary split among residents over whether or not to join South River permanently; however, both groups have since reconciled themselves and Northvale has become part ofSouthRiver again. As one result of its continued growth potential – thanks largely to Interstate 95 – South River has become home to many high-tech companies such as IBM Watson Research Center; NASA Goddard Space Flight Center; Continental Airlines Headquarters; Rutgers University School Of Engineering & Science; Prudential Financial Tower - all located within walking distance or short bus rides away from each other across three local bridges: Raritan Creek Bridge over Raritan Creek/Newark Bayou; First Street Bridge over Passaic Bayou/Raritan Creek/Newark Bayou

It changed its name to "SouthRiver" on May 10th of that year after being purchased from local Native American leaders by English settlers under the leadership of George Washington as part of his larger effort to open up new land to settlement. In 1683, the Dutch founded a settlement on what is now South River in New Jersey. The first European to live there was Andrew D'Angelo, who arrived with his family from Rome in 1683. By 1701, the town of Newark had been founded nearby and by 1720, it had become an important trading center for the region. In 1814, during the War of 1812, Newark was burned by British forces and its inhabitants were forced to flee. The town returned to Dutch hands after the war and became a part of their province of Holland. In 1846, when New Jersey seceded from the United States, South River became part of English North Jersey. It remains a part of English North Jersey to this day.
