Bullet history in South River can be traced back to 1824 when Samuel Colt began making rifles and pistols in New Haven, CT. His pistols were used by the U.S. military during the Mexican-American War and later in the Civil War. After the war, Colt continued to make firearms and started selling them to civilians as well. In 1865, he created what is still known as the Colt revolver, which was designed for use with small rounds called “balls” or “bullets”. The popularity of these handguns led to their widespread distribution throughout America and Europe. South River is located on the southern edge of the township of West Egg and is bordered by the townships of East Egg and Clinton to the east, Northumberland to the north, and Hackensack to the west. The town was founded in 1764 by Dutch immigrants as "Hogerlandt" or "Hockenheim". It was renamed South River in 1818 after its location on Raritan Bayou opposite that now known as Newark Liberty International Airport. In 1824, it became part of Mercer County when it was created from parts of Essex and Union counties. As with most rural areas in America during this time period, farming played an important role in South River's early development. Today, some heavy industry still exists in the form of manufacturing plants operated by Prudential Insurance Company (PIC) and FedEx Ground; both companies are located near Interstate 95 just south of town center on Raritan Bayou

South River, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,836 at the 2010 census. South River is located on the southern border of Hunterdon County and its northern border is that of Mercer County. It forms part of the Paterson–Easton metropolitan area. The first settlement in what became South River was made by Nicholas D’Angelo and his family on December 12, 1795 from the corner farm of Easton and Cherry Streets in Darien Township. Nicholas’s land lay east-northeast of what would become South River proper and he named it for himself and his home village of Riva (now a part of Glassboro). In 1802, John Nicholson settled on a tract adjacent to present-day Northumberland Avenue in what now would be known as West Milford Township. By 1815, there were nine families living in South River:Five Germans (Nicholson, Hechtman, Bender, Schmidt), four Italian Americans (Perego & Cozzone), one Dutch American (Dirk) and one Scotch American (Ferguson). In 1828 or 1830*, three brothers—Jonathan Edwards*, Edward Everett*—founded Princeton University on land they had purchased from David Bushnell* near Princeton Junction. The Edwards brothers also founded Delaware Valley Railroad(*) which connected their property with Newark via an existing trackage route. Rutgers College (*) also started up outfitting students for travel to Morristown (*) during this time period before becoming an all-graduate institution in 1861 when it moved from Rahway to Newark campus*. Rutgers then became Newark State Teachers College *. In 1850 or1851*, Samuel Waddell† set up wagon factory at present day White Plains Road/Route 22 south of junction with Route 9 east of today’s Fort Lee.* Waddell operated two other mills within two miles radius until 1854 when he closed both plants due to financial difficulties caused by competition from free enterprise associations such as the Morris Canal Company(*). A new mill was built at present day Old Bridge Road/Route 8 about a mile southeast of White Plains Road/Route 22 where Waddell operated it until 1865 when he sold it to George Browning who renamed it Browning Manufacturing Company(*). Brownsville Steel Works opened nearby in 1872(*), which helped continue development along Route 22 northward intotoday’s Trenton NJ area *. A post office called South River was established in 1806; its firstulators were Hugh CARTWRIGHT† alias HUGH CARTER†(*)& James LADDING† alias JAMES LAMBDIN†(*)& John MORRISON†(*)& James KNOX ≡ JOHN KNEEKER ≡ ONTARIO SMITH Jr., ALLEN PEAKE ≡ WILLIAM PERRY JR., THOMAS KNOX ≡ SAMUEL OWENS ≡ TIMOTHY LINCOLN ≡ JOSEPH THOMAS *) kicked off operations July 1st 1800*. Settlement continued apace with German immigrants building homes starting around 1800; these homes are still standing today including those used as residences by Presidents Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush among others.* One particular group that immigrated early were Swiss Jews who arrived between1800-1805 aboard the ship "Swiss bark Simplon" under license from Emperor Napoleon I.* Some sources claim that over 60%of postwar Hunterdon County settlers were either Swiss Jews or emigrants from Eastern Europe.* tracker signs remaining today point directly to this earliest Settler history; examples include those dated October 15th 1800* which marks 100 years since the signing ofthe Treaty Of Paris ending World War 1*, another dated November 3rd 1800* which marks 50 years since America acquired title to lands west bank stream *near current day Paterson*/ Easton*/ Livingston*** ), Another datemarked October 24th 1797 marked 25 years since farmstead erected upon lot now occupied by First Baptist church located on same line opposite old S R H Inn**** ). The South River was a natural stream that flowed through the town of Morristown, New Jersey. The river was cut by glaciers in the Pleistocene epoch and formed part of the New Jersey Highlands. The name "South River" comes from the fact that it flows south-southwest.
