South River is a small town in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,471 at the 2010 census. The name of the town originated from South River Creek which flows through its core. The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1498 and he named it "Verrazano". In 1764, Samuel Johnson found some rocks at South River which may have been used as a source for his famous line: "A stone's throw from hence I come." In 1814, Nicholas-Jacques Conte built a house on what is now Front Street in SouthRiver. He later donated land to the township and construction began on what is now the village of South River. On July 3, 1824, Camden Township erected a public house on Main Street in front of the current administration building in SouthRiver. The first post office was established here on October 15, 1825 with Wm Burch as postmaster. On November 10th of that year, John Fenton purchased 1 acre (0.40 km²) of land east of present-day Park Avenue from Nicholas-Jacques Conte for $350 ($ today). This property became known as Fenton's Meadows and remained an agricultural community until after World War II when it became suburbanized with housing developments nearby. / / / It was not until 1957 that Prior Lake Drive entered into existence adjacent to present day White Sands Boulevard between CR 611N (now Old Bridge Road) and Park Avenue; Prior Lake Drive had previously only been accessible by following CR 611W south approximately 12 miles (19 km). South River has had a variety of businesses and residents over its history including furniture stores (Furniture Row), chemical companies (BP) and pharmaceuticals plants (Aventis Pharmaceuticals). The town's first post office opened in 1847 and closed in 1960 due to mergers within Mercer County Office Park personnel management systems then becoming statewide government-wide practices; all but one post office closed by 2000 however four have reopened since then because OFDEP abandoned their formerOPPOSITION service model whereby all county offices operated as single entities managed by an OHIP contractor until they were disbanded in 2006 after being unsuccessfully opposed by both parties in a partisan election that year amidst numerous plans to consolidate county offices across multiple agencies – primary among them efforts to provide more efficient governance through consolidation – however these failed attempts led to anti-government sentiment throughout OFDEP culminating with Director Guido Buono resigning effective February 1st 2006 amidst allegations he colluded with opposition leaders during his tenure against planned consolidations ultimately leading to his firing following an internal investigation). However despite public opposition TO DDEP'S plan(s)– many including Mayor Edward Meeks who characterized it as "a betrayal" - AGAIN due largely to Buono's resignation several months earlier - OFDEP successfully implemented new OPPOSITION services models wherein all county offices operated independently until they were abolished effective February 1st 2006 making South River Municipality one large agency administered by an appointed Director who reported directly to Governor Christie - thus finally ending decades of government fragmentation across multiple agencies within single organizations - giving residents more control & choice over their local government while still providing better governance overall - Welcome back!
