South Plainfield, New Jersey is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,816 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous community in Morris County after Morristown. South Plainfield is located on the southern edge of the township of Plainsboro and shares borders with Parsippany to the west, Haddon Heights to the north, and Plainsboro Township to the east. The township was formed from part of Middlesex County on March 14, 1814. The first residents were farmers who grew corn, beans and other vegetables for their own consumption and sale. They also raised horses and used wagons to carry goods up and down Route 9A which ran through their township. The area now encompassing South Plainfield was originally part of North PlainFIELD until it became part of Morris County on April 14th 1868 when all of Middlesex County was divided into two parts by Act 2 of 1869. In 1886 John Fenton built a grist mill in what is now known as Fenton's Corners within what is today's South Plainfield Township; this mill still remains in operation today as an agricultural grain elevator called "Fenton's Mill". In 1907 James Crouse donated land along Route 9A between Parsippany (now Pennsauken) and Haddon Heights for a shopping center that would eventually become known as "Crouse's Center". On November 25th 1924 local resident Archibald MacLeod founded "MacLeod's Nursery" which continues to provide quality nursery products throughoutMorris County today - one mile south of where he started his business originally! On May 3rd 1926 local resident Harry Wexler opened "Wexler Floral Emporium" which continues to be one of NJ's largest floral retailers! The development that would house these businesses together would come to be known as "South Plainfield Plaza" - home to many more retail stores over time including Macy's (July 1984- present), JCPenney (March 1984-present), Sears (April 1987-present) and Dunkin' Donuts (November 1992- present). Today South Plainfield has become an important cultural center for Morris Countians with its mix of high school students who attend nearby Morristown High School graduating onto larger campuses across New Jersey or Greater Philadelphia while also maintaining close relationships with their families here locally; many locals continue to work downtown or commute out if they have day jobs elsewhere inNJ or PA rather than staying within town limits all day long like so many others before them! South Plainfield was formed on March 14, 1874 from part of what was then Union Township and became an unincorporated community after its own incorporated government was created in 1907. The first Europeans to visit what is now South Plainfield were Dutch traders who landed there in 1630. The area that would become South Plainfield was part of Middlesex County until 1776 when it became part of Passaic County. In 1804, the town of Dumont constructed a gristmill on the Hackensack River which served as the town's primary source of income for many years. In 1875, a group of men from Pascagoula, Mississippi led by Captain Daniel Webster founded the First National Bank in South Plainfield. The bank built a frame building on Main Street that still stands today and continues to serve as headquarters for the bank today. In 1907, South Plainfield became an unincorporated community and had its own government with its own schools and police department. The borough absorbed portions of nearby Paramus in 1970 and 1974 respectively before becoming fully consolidated with Paramus on July 1, 2007 pursuant to changes made in township law as part of municipal consolidation across Passaic CountyNJ which went into effect on January 1st 2008
The South Plainfield area was first settled in the early 1700s. The area came under English control in 1664, and was incorporated as a township in 1743. In 1837, the Township of South Plainfield became a borough. On July 1, 1955, the Borough of South Plainfield merged with the Township of Union to form the city of South Plainfield.
