The first Europeans to arrive in what is now South Plainfield were Dutch miners and their families. The Dutchmen built a small fort on what is now Route 53 near where Easton Boulevard and Route 9 intersect today. They named the fort "New Amsterdam" after their new colony. The Dutch sold land to English colonists in 1664, becoming part of England as a result. In 1665, English General John Churchill landed at Cape May County and forced the surrender of Dutch forces at Monmouth Bridge. The English installed an American general, George Washington, as commander of British troops in North America. One of Washington's orders was to disarm all Native Americans living within his boundaries. This order caused some problems for local Indians because many of them owned firearms that could be used for self-defense against white settlers or animals. In 1776, when Pennsylvania became an independent state, its Indian population increased because much of what is now Pennsylvania was then included within British territory. As a result, Pennsylvania passed a law providing for martial law during any time when Indian hostilities existed between Patriots and Loyalists (those who supported Britain). This law was known as "The Statute of Westminster." Under martial law conditions, individuals could be arrested and held without trial until such time as order could be restored by government officials or military action. In 1779, Patriot militias staged a successful assault on Fort Cumberland near Carlisle while under martial law conditions; this event is considered one of the most iconic moments in United States history. On December 15th 1812 Governor James Ketchum ordered all male residents over 21 years old to carry arms against possible invasion by Great Britain from Canada; this order sparked off what is known as The Battle Of Fort Erie which resulted in loss of life for both sides but also demonstrated public support for Uprising against British rule. This situation changed significantly with the re-establishment of personal liberty following Napoleonic Wars which ended with Treaty Of Tilsit (1805). In this treaty Napoleon ceded parts of Europe to Russia including Southern Russia including Southwestern New York State including South Plainfield Township which formed part of Russian Empire along with other areas eastward beyond Prussia and Austria into Poland

South Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Newark-Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. South Plainfield is known for its agricultural production and its high quality of life. The first settlers in what is now South Plainfield were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664. They were followed by English colonists in 1674. The area that includes present day South Plainfield was part of Bergen County until it was merged with Hunterdon County on January 1, 1814. As early as 1702, Indian traders had been trading goods and services along the Passaic River valley from what is today Uniondale to Paterson and beyond. In 1712 John Montresor bought 4 lots in what would become South Plainfield from Alexander Hamilton for $5200 orchard produce (a value which has since increased to over $100 million). The Montresor family continued to make significant contributions to the community through land purchases and donations over time. In 1800, local Puritan farmers began producing hay and other crops outdoors rather than using barns or sheds for this purpose; as a result, there are few if any remnants of early village life left today within the boundaries of present day South Plainfield Township (although some evidence remains from before 1700). One suchexample can be found near where Interstate 80 meets Route 9 south of town – there are still traces of an old roadbed that ran between those two routes until about 1950 when I-80 diverted around it completely! In fact, much of what once surrounded downtown – including most importantly grist mills dating back to the days when woolen yarn was processed hereabouts – has long disappeared beneath modern development; but one can still visit various former mill buildings on nearby Roundabout Road within a short distance of downtown! The township's first courthouse opened on May 8th 1824 under then Judge Samuel Herrick . The building sat on the corner lot now occupied by Northumberland Avenue and State Street until 1951 when it burned down; however parts have been rebuilt several times since then! On July 2nd 1831 Abraham Lincoln held his famous “House Divided” speech here while attending a meeting hosted by Congressman James Kapp during hiskins' term as state senator from NJ nothing more than miles away at Rahway Hall! A plaque dedication ceremony honoring Mr Lincoln took place on October 7th 2020 just east of center field at Toms Valley High School after being placed there by Heritage FoundationNJ Heritage programmistress treasures@gmailcom

South Plainfield, New Jersey is a borough located in the northeastern portion of Bergen County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 18,836. South Plainfield was incorporated as a township on July 1, 1838 and became a borough on November 3 of that year. The name "South Plainfield" comes from an area near where the present-day Borough borders East Brunswick and Hamilton Township. The first inhabitants of what is now South Plainfield were Native Americans who lived along the Hackensack River until they were driven out by European colonists in 1664. The first Europeans to settle in what is now South Plainfield were Dutch settlers who started farming in 1672 near what is now Old Bridge. In 1701, British colonists arrived and began trading with the local natives. In 1710, Northumberland County was formed from parts of Middlesex and Essex Counties and South Plainfield became part of that new county. In 1812, during the War of 1812, units of General George Washington’s army passed through South Plainfield while marching north to take possession of Fort Orange at Kingston (now West Nyack). On October 20th, 1814 – two days after Yorktown had fallen – General James Kippenberger set up his headquarters at farms near today’s Roosevelt Boulevard and First Avenue in South Plainfield after crossing into New Jersey from Ontario County (now Burlington County). Aftermath show that many buildings still standing today date back to this time period including Fort Kippenberger which served as Headquarters for all aspects surrounding operations during this time frame; batteries #2 & 5 within plainview Cemetery still exist; powder magazine & fortifications behind residences on First Avenue still stand today! In 1860 when township officials decided to annex neighboring East Brunswick Township due to increasing population density within our boundaries we named our new town “South PlainFIELD” effective November 3rd 1860 Population increase over time: Between 1840-2010 census there was an increase in population by 15%.

On the outskirts of South Plainfield, New Jersey is a small town that was once known for its textile mills. The mills closed in the early 1920s, but the town has continued to grow since then.
