South Plainfield, New Jersey is a town located in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. South Plainfield has been inhabited by the Lenape people since 1681. The Dutch founded the first permanent European settlement in what is now South Plainfield on September 26,1684 as Fort Nassau and named it after his patron saint – Nicholas of Nieuw Amsterdam. The first white settler in what is now South Plainfield was John Fish who arrived on October 9,1686 with his family from Rhode Island. The township was organized on April 14, 1836 by order of state Governor James K. Caldwell. The name "South Plainfield" was chosen to represent the wide open nature of the township which stretched from Rahway east to West Eggton and south to Bordentown Township and Springfield Township beyond. On February 17, 1848, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Union County and landed at Camden Harbour near present-day Glassboro Township in Middlesex County before moving northeastward into Union County and invading Princeton Junction where he destroyed two munitions factories - one for Harper's Ferry Arsenal under President Abraham Lincoln and one for Winchester Armory under Ulysses S Grant - burning more than 1 million pounds of powder and shot inside each factory complex alone. In 1865–1866 Union troops burned down all but four houses in what is now East Brunswick Township while Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Hoey’s 4th Cavalry Regiment marched through town destroying most buildings along their route en route to Trenton Valley which they reached just before dark on November 25th; this event is still commemorated by a large stone monument at corner of Main Street & Boundary Road (now Route 22).
