South Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Plainfield was founded in 1777 by English settlers who went to that area to escape religious persecution in England. The town was named after the plain between South Amboy and Plainsboro where they first settled. The community of South Plainfield grew rapidly during World War II as a result of its proximity to military bases and its ability to produce food for the war effort. In 1945, the Community Development Act created the Banks Township Committee which helped develop banks and other businesses in South Plainfield. Today, South Plainfield is known for its manufacturing sector and for being home to many small businesses that are important to local economies. South Plainfield also has a rich history dating back to when it was part of Englewood Township. On July 1, 1814, Englewood Township became North Bergen County and soon afterward organized as an independent township with its own government with a Lodge No. 2 (the firstEnglewood Lodge). On November 15th 1829 North Bergen County acquired what are now Webster Park and East Orange from Englewood Township; this purchase gave rise to what is now called "South Plainfield". On February 14th 1922, Englewood Township changed their name from North Bergen Borough to Hunterdon County due partly theretofore unnoticed changes made by then-Governor John Fenton which consolidated all Essex County towns into one entity under authority of the new county government - all but four having done so since 1800 when Middlesex County had been divided into three parts: Hackensack on the north shore (including Hoboken), East Brunswick on the east side (Easton & Passaic Counties) and Sumter on or near Cape May (now MonmouthshireCounty). Hunterdon County quickly obtained land adjacent both sides of Route 12 from Burlington Land Company - including present day South Plainfield - making it available for settlement. Many farmers moved into what would become known as "the Agricultural Triangle" around those two military installations: West Deptford barracks/facility on Roosevelt Road near Plumstead Junction; Rockaway Barracks/Facility just south of Route 9 north of Homestead Junction; Hunting Hills Ammunition Plant northeast of Harrison Avenue between flows of Raritan River; White Sands Ammunition Plant northwest corner Clinton Avenue & Weehawken Creek junction As development took hold throughout much of New Jersey following World War II more people began moving into this agricultural triangle seeking opportunities for economic growth within wartime production capacities such as auto plants along I-95 traffic corridors outside Newark NJ or elsewhere in major industrial areas nationally such asPhiladelphia PA or Detroit MI; however some residents did leave these areas because living expenses were too high relative prices set through postwar inflation rates combined with wartime scarcityzoning Jobs in these postindustrial regions caused numerous families exiting rural areas over 50 years ago today's market value real estate values relative job security may be justifying some early departures

The population was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2000 and has since grown to over 150,000 residents. South Plainfield is located in central New Jersey on the banks of the Raritan River. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1676. The name "South Plainfield" comes from a plot of land on which the original settlers built a small farmstead. Over time, the town became known for its handsome architecture and rich history. The early settlers of South Plainfield were pioneering farmers who chose to live close to nature and explore new opportunities for agriculture. By 1810, there were 12 families living in South Plainfield. That year, Reverend John Woolridge founded Mount Zion Baptist Church in what is now South Plainfield. In 1812, Major General George Washington visited South Plainfield and praised the town's architecture and roads as "excellent." By 1830, there were 10 families living in South PlainFIELD with many more coming during the subsequent years. By 1860, after decades of growth and development within South PlainFIELD itself – both through entrepreneurship and government funding – it had nearly doubled its population to 30 families when it amalgamated with neighboring Paramus (now North Paramus) into what would eventually become Westwood Township (now Plainsboro). It wasn't until 1922 that another major change occurred within our community; when local businessmen purchased 160 acres adjacent to where present-day Route 13 crosses Raritan River upstream from downtownSouth Plainfieldsouth square began developing into one of America's most vibrant shopping centers thanks largely to two brothers named Harry Kessler (1907-1996) who ran an airmail service out his home near Plumsted Airport called Newark Expressway before dying suddenly at age 54 while on vacation at his private ranch outside Palm Beach County south plain field NJ history
