The land that is now South Plainfield was first settled by Europeans in the early 17th century. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland, and it was later purchased by English colonists. In 1664, the English put down a rebellion against their rule by General Nicholas Wayne, and South Plainfield became part of his province. The town developed slowly until the mid-19th century, when a railroad came through the area and began to draw people to its townsite. Development continued until World War II, when the town lost its status as a village and became an incorporated city.
