In 1801, South Plainfield was established as a town in Middlesex County by order of the New Jersey General Assembly. The township was named for Captain Abraham Stroud, who had been appointed by Governor Jameson to survey and manage the area. On November 8, 1802, South Plainfield became part of Union Township in Middlesex County. On February 14, 1811, a group of men armed with pistols and shotguns marched into town to demand that Mayor John J. Fitzpatrick be given a jury trial for charges of bribery and extortion. Fitzpatrick refused to appear before the group and they dispersed without incident. On February 20, 1811, a mob gathered at the courthouse where Mayor Fitzpatrick was serving out his sentence for bribery. They dragged him from the building and burned it down. The riots that followed are known as the "Fitzpatrick Riot." South Plainfield remained an open-air polling place until 1865 when voting became secret under state law. In 1897, South Plainfield voters approved Measure E which created township government within South Plainfield itself instead of having it administered through Middlesex County. The measure also provided for township trustees to levy taxes on property values in order to support public education and other village/township functions within the township
South Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,819 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Newark-Union metropolitan area and is located just north of Union City on the east side of the Hackensack River. South Plainfield was founded by Europeans in 1764 as Fort Plainfield and later named for Sir George Carteret (1675-1744), British Ambassador to America. The first settlers were Dutch who arrived in 1624 and established a small trading post on the riverfront. In 1764, when English colonists arrived in what is now Middlesex County, they also founded Fort Plainfield south of present day Union City on the east side of the Hackensack River. The name "Fort Plainfield" may have been chosen because it resembled an open field that could be garrisoned easily by soldiers. In 1781, after New Jersey became a state, Jameson's brigade under General John Burgoyne fought at Saratoga Springs against George Washington's forces under George Clinton – one of only two engagements during Burgoyne's American Revolutionary War career where his regiment participated (the other being at Battle of Saratoga). In 1814 South Plainfield was incorporated as a township from portions of Newton Township which had been organized earlier that year. On July 1, 1836 South PlainFIELD became a full municipality with its own government and school board On November 3rd 1922 South Plains high school opened its doors to students from all over central NJ through IEPs/ADPs

South Plainfield, New Jersey is a town in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,746 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from the South Plainfield River which flows through it. South Plainfield is bordered by Mount Olivet to the north and east; Bridgeton to the south and west; and Maple Shade Township to the northwest. The town has two ZIP codes: 07604 and 07601. The history of South Plainfield can be traced back to 1730 when Dutch settlers founded a small settlement on what is now Long Valley Road in what is today South Plainfield Township. By 1755, much of present-day Burlington County had been taken over by English colonists as part of the British colony of Pennsylvania. In 1806, portions of Burlington County were included in newly created Middlesex County, and South Plainfield became part of that county. On July 1, 1812, just before American independence was recognized, South Plainfield voted to secede from Middlesex County and become an independent village known as "South Plains". On October 24th following this vote, President James KentsKI signed a document declaring that "the whole township (of) South Plains [was] exempted from all taxes" effective November 1st - an event which has been celebrated annually since then as "Kent's Day". During World War II many residents served in the military including those who made up one-third of all fatalities during the conflict which took place between America and Nazi Germany. Residents also played a major role in developing Post Office Square which now stands next to Interstate 95 in nearby Trenton NJ after being donated by Mayor John Fitzgerald (1921-2005). In 1967 local resident Clifford Jaffe died while serving as Mayor pro tem forBurlington County under then Borough President Joseph Sarno III effective January 1st 1966 until his resignation on May 2nd due to health reasons set forth therein allowed for nomination by mayor Rudolph Giuliani with primary election taking place on June 5th pursuant to municipal code § 3-2(a). Giuliani was reelected with 67% of the vote against challenger Leonard Wexler's 31%. Following Sarno's death Lieutnant Governor Edward Diehl granted authority within New Jersey State Police Headquarters Special Operation unit #4 located at 7 Livingston Avenue North Alloway Street Newark NJ for its first female officer Lt.(jg) Carol Madden starting on September 10th 1977 providing law enforcement services within Oneida Lake Park adjacent thereto Village Green away from), open gaming areas therefrom without prior written consent or license thereof issued hereinunder bounded northerly by Livingston Avenue thence easterly along said avenue unto limits assigned thereto hereby established consisting principally of Lots Nos 11 & 12 lying Motte & Bailey street lot No 13 adjoining Chapel Road lots Nos 14 & 15 lying Springvale Avenue between Springvale Avenue & Elmira Road Lots Nos 16 & 17 lying Route 22 Wagon Wheel Lane lots No 18SRU Lot 19 bordering Cedarhurst Drive lot No 20 adjoining Hackensack Creek lot No 21 adjoining Bound Brook Reservation together with rights apportioned thereto among various proprietors thereof aforesaid forming Township Park reservation area situated near Princeton Junction NEP Entity entity boundaries therein are not considered real property lines heretofore published hereinunder but are subject thereto shall any resurfacing or alteration thereupon require written consent otherwise erected boundary lines herein should be so corrected
The township of South Plainfield was established in 1837, and came about from the combination of two other townships, North Plainfield and West Plainfield. The township is named for the plain on which it was located. In its early days, the town had only a small population, as farmers used it mainly for grazing animals. However, over time South Plainfield grew with the help of industries such as papermaking and brewing. In 1911, South Plainfield became part of Bergen County and began to develop into a busy industrial center. Today, South Plainfield is home to many businesses that contribute to its economy, including a hospital and several colleges and universities.
