During World War II, two stores in town were used as arsenals by the military for storage of weapons. The first store reopened after the war and continued to serve as such until 1955. The second store closed its doors after years of serving customers with firearms primarily handguns but also shotguns and rifles. South Plainfield is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 37,814. South Plainfield was founded in 1757 and became a borough in 1834. The township was formed on October 15, 1847 from portions of Burlington Township. On November 3, 1954, parts of Rahway Township were merged into South Plainfield. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had a total area of , of which (or 98%) was land and (or 2%) was water. As of the 2010 Census, there were 20 residents in South Plainfield and Hackensack combined. The history of South Plainfield goes back to early British settlers who arrived in 1764 as part of the George Washington Battalion during the American Revolution. The area now known as South Plainfield was part of what was then called Monmouth County and remained so until it was divided into Union County on October 8, 1800. At that time, Monmouth County consisted of parts of both Middlesex County (the current boroughs of Newark and Paterson) as well as Sussex County (now East Sussex). In 1838, when Union County was created from portions of Middlesex and Sussex Counties following the American Civil War, North Brunswick Township within Northumberland Parish became part of Union City while West Brunswick Township within Hunterdon Parish became part of South Brunswick City. With this change in boundaries came an increased population density - something which would later be mirrored by growth rates for both municipalities when they merged into their present form on July 1st 2009. South PlainFIELD's downtown district has been home to many businesses since its incorporation date including J&J Bakery & Cafe which opened its doors on Main Street in 1959; First National Bank which relocated to Center Street in 1990; Bankers Trust Company which moved across Route 22nd Avenue from Park Avenue Plaza in 1997; Macy's Store - now Macy's rackets store - opened its doors at 205 Walnut Street just east of where Main Street meets Route 22nd Avenue on December 9th 1955; Brownie Bites Candy Company - still located at 205 Walnut Street today! - first opened their doors at 222 Summit Avenue on October 7th 1951 followed by Applebee's restaurant at 219 Park Ave., not far away at 227 Elmhurst Road on November 3rd 1953; Allstate Insurance Company had its Headquarters Building off Northeastern Boulevard between Rutgers University-Newark (now State College) Blvd., bordering Newark Airport approximately 2 blocks south along that same corridor from which insurance premiums were collected until moving all operations inside what is now Riverbend Place Shopping Center building between Eastern Parkway/Northeastern Boulevard/Rutgers Univ.-Newark campus northward beginning with move-in day September 5th 1969 after acquisition by Sam Adams Incorporated!... over time many more businesses have popped up such as KFC restaurant located adjacent to CVS Pharmacy having been open since 1978... local high school students have also frequented restaurants like Subway sandwich shop next to Target closed down circa 2006 but reopened under different ownership several years ago... finally there are numerous private residences situated throughout town providing late night dining options unique experiences not typically found elsewhere! Overall these examples show that once a community establishes itself among others through commerce or services offered therein it will likely continue doing so for generations to come
